Is this 16800 matte good to go? Looking to buy
Need opinions does this 16800 look good to go?
They say the hands and dial is all original as well as the bezel even though it has a deeper patina... Is the dial A MK3? Also the bezel is it suppose to be a flat 4? Thanks for your help |

The watch is nice, but if I was spending close to five figures I’d want more look than this presents...

Looks pretty nice to me.. the pips on these and 666 are usually darker than the dial so that’s normal

Sadly I didn't buy it. Went to look at it and gave the watch 40 turns to start it after 30 seconds or so the watch stopped and wouldn't run anymore when winding again or shaking it... The dealer said probably just needs a new mainspring, so while i was looking at other watches he was talking how he buys cases/movements separately and polishes them and services them and adds the extra dials and hands he has in his inventory... I didn't like the sound of that. Plus its weird but when I was looking at around 6 submariner matte dials 1680/16800 for some reason they looked like they were printed on a piece of paper and made the watch look cheap. All these beautiful pics of matte dials online and in person they just look for some reason cheap... Disappointing.

I see your name 16800 for life...was this the first time you have seen matte dials in person??? Those are some bad signs there but not sure how they look cheap, sounds like you should be looking for something new or with white gold hour markers

Yes I still own and wear my 16800 I bought new in september of 1984 from a rolex dealer that came with the tritium gloss dial and white surrounds, lovely silver date wheel background that pops with open 6 and 9's and gives that classy look. I did see a matte dial back then at the dealer when I purchased this watch and had a choice on either or but I forgot about how they look in person. I had two options at the time matte or gloss, the dealer said rolex is transitioning to gloss dials from matte and when I saw the gloss I fell in love so that's what I purchased at the time and have been wearing since. So recently those memories came up seeing all these pics online and was curious...

Op, I know you passed, but just for reference here is a shot of my bezel. They're not a true flat 4 font. |

Bracelet as well. Dial had a bit of a run at the 6 o'clock marker but I overlooked that for the price offered. I looked back at my speadsheet...I actually spent $3450.

Even if all that is service its still double what you paid....that’s why people view these watches as stock-like investments
