What I get from all the internet chatter and Rolex Dealers I have visited "World Wide" is that the biggest fascination and draw to a stainless "Flipper" is if it can be scored at MSRP then gloat about it on the forums.. How many threads are posted with stainless on a steering wheel with the stainlesss and a cuban cigar..HAH.. I am not making fun of a stainless steel watch but the crying and whining about my AD this and my AD that and was not able to score the thing for MSRP.. The key word is snagging one for MSRP because there is 100's of them you can buy but have to penny up to get yah one.... Its all the fault of the "MY AD" that one was not able to snag a stainless at MSRP...

Ummmm. Are you seriously disparaging people for showing off a bit? Is that really happening? Or am I reading this all wrong?

I don’t know why all this angers people so much it’s a funny place on this forum it’s not how people act in the real world at all. People just buy what they want to buy .. like myself.. I’ve paid over retail, under retail, on retail. I can’t get a Rolex from an AD, I mean I’ve bought a couple and have been told I can get certain models if I want on a three year waiting list, that’s just not for me I could be dead by the time I get to wear it. Whatever the market price is then I pay it.

Rolex IS and will remain to be a status symbol, just in my humble opinion. I have friends who would go and drop 20k for example on a GMT, with absolutely no idea wtf that extra hand even does lol. The jaw dropping prices only make them more desirable.

There’s a lot of room for them to climb even higher too, AP have waiting lists on all of there 15500. Numerous years for a blue, and that’s a £20k ss watch at retail.

One of the “fascinations” with SS “flippers” is that maybe not everyone wants to be noticed with a rose/yellow gold Rolex on their wrist while they are going about their daily lives.

Perhaps some of those buyers are just as happy as you are when you post your receipts from your $200 bottle of tequila or when you post screenshots of your $400 bike tire pumps?

Yellow gold has a certain appeal, but for a sport watch, or a watch that is planned to be used heavily by an active individual, I prefer stainless. I think it’s pretty clear that it will hold up to modest abuse much better than gold or platinum.
As to why stainless is selling at a premium for many models from Patek, Rolex, etc. is simply down to availability and MSRP. A lower MSRP allows a larger potential audience to consider the purchase, and the artificial restriction of supply drives secondary market prices into the stratosphere.
