Hi.
Just wanted to say Laphroaig is not peaty, it's smokey.
Peaty infers an earthy taste, whereas smokey infers just that.
Yes it's the burning peat that imparts the smokeyness, but overall Laphroaig and most whiskies from both Islay and Skye are described as smokey.
If however you can taste earth, then you can rightly say you find it peaty.
Less oxidation from a high temperature of the fire on peat leads to phenolic.
More oxidation from a lower temperature of the fire on peat leads to more bonfire smoke.

that makes sense and i happen to like Laphroaig regardless but i am curious what do you recommend for an earthy taste? I would like to do some comparisons as I'm always up for new tastes and do usually stick to my few favorites.

Had anyone had any experience carrying a bottle on a flight with them, that was not purchased at duty free? I just picked up a bottle of Lagavulin 16 intended as a gift for someone overseas so it's new and sealed and in it's box. I didn't see it at duty free the last time I traveled. Does anyone definitively know whether I'll run into any issues having this in my checked luggage? I found the following on a TSA site:

Checked Baggage

Any amount of alcohol greater than 3.4 ounces must be packed in checked baggage.
Alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, cannot be packed in checked luggage.
Travelers may take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70% per person as checked luggage if it’s packaged in a sealable bottle or flask.
Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.

https://www.tsa.gov/blog/2014/01/07/...olic-beverages

This will be on an international flight, if it makes a difference.

Blanton's...All Day Every Day. Pappy is just for collecting for me, I don't care much for it other than the 23yr. I enjoy the 10yr over the 15yr. But would still rather drink Blanton's. As for hot chocolate, I find the Eagle Rare's Toffee finish blends nicely with my winter hot chocolate :)

I do not know much about whiskey considering that my drink of choice is usually a Negroni but I've always had an interest. A friend of mine mentioned Glenfiddich 40 and a place in town received a bottle a week ago.

I wasn't mentioning it as an interest in buying the bottle especially when I know nothing about whiskey but I am aware of the cost.

All good. When my friend mentioned that it was one of the best they ever had, I went online to see how much it would run me thinking that I would spend 150-200 tips and when I saw the cost I told myself that I need to start with something a lot cheaper haha. Any recommendations on where to begin?

I’m a huge fan of Macallan 15 & Hibiki 17. I have one last bottle of Hibiki 17 but I’m actually looking to sell rather than drink lol.

My go to favorite readily available would be Makers Mark without getting into the harder to find Bourbons that I enjoy.

For scotch try Johnny Walker Double Black and for Canadian try Crown Royal Reserve. And for Irish, Jameson Cask Mates.

How about a little Monkey Shoulder? Vanilla and oak... so good.

And a bit of trivia, it's 'Whisky' if it comes from a country without an E in the name. It's 'whiskey' from countries with an E, as a general rule.

I usually circle back to my favorite "Brown Water" Crown Royal. Would anyone offer any suggestions that does not stray too far from my favorite as I enjoy trying new selections?

Got this at Bed Bath & Beyond. I have yet to try it out but I'm hopeful it will work well.

Try Buffalo Trace - has a little more bight than Crown, but still very smooth and very reasonably priced.

WRT ice, I just bought these molds and they arrive tomorrow.
