MontBlanc Alexandre Dumas Fountain Pen

Hey everyone,

I received a MontBlanc Alexandre Dumas Fountain Pen as a birthday/congratulatory gift for my latest promotion.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on inking it and using it? I really want to, but there is a part of me that can’t bring myself to do it.

Happy Birthday and Congrats! I say ink and enjoy it! It's a very nicely crafted pen.

Absolutely gorgeous pen.

In my never to be humble opinion, ink it and enjoy! You will find yourself being very careful so I don't have much fear that you will have anything horrible happen to it. Life is too short to not enjoy the things you have worked for.

I remember when I purchased my first Montblanc Agatha Christie Vermeil. It has sold on Ebay for $4000.00 in the past. It is such a gorgeous pen and I, like you, fought with myself about using it. Then after I did I was very glad. Still am today.

Congratulations!!! And you even got one with the correct father's signature and not the one with the sons!

Cheers!

My Agatha....

I'm firmly in the camp that says use it and enjoy it. Your watch is probably on your wrist, getting scratched and dinged and beat all to crap, but that's what it's for! Ditto the pen, use it to write with. And BTW, it's gorgeous. Congrats on the promotion too!

And it is even the correct Dumas Signature. My also correct Dumas is one of the few Montblancs I would hate to sell. It's a great writer and one of only two Writers Series patterned on the large 139.

That is a lovely MontBlanc... and congrats on the promotion. I would use the heck out of that pen! Like they said above, life is too short! Throw some ink in it and start using.

The other being the Hemingway! And you have to love that #9 nib! Same as the MB 149.

Enjoy!

Congratulations on the promotion and upon reaching another birthday.

You know you've a well-designed and well-construced, high-quality pen. There shouldn't exist any rational concern with respect to wearing out any of its components. Give thought to allowing those considerate and generous enough to acknowledge your interest in this activity to observe you enjoying it. Perhaps occasion will arise for you to sign for or with them a card or work document thus at a later time providing opportunity to acknowledge your continuing enjoyment of this item. Given the circumstances under which it has been received it seems doubtful that pen will find itself offered for sale at any price.

I'm glad to note you've decided to ink it up and throw down some lines. Happy Cursive.

I have this Dumas too and use it frequently. If you have average to large hands you will love it. The section is thick and the size 9 nib is just lovely to look at and writes very good (even with a medium nib)

After all is said and done.... what good is a pen if it is not used to pen ink to paper?

Rock on and ink that sucker!

Oh, I’ve inked it and used it. It writes beautifully! I have since flushed it, and the next time I ink it and use it will be when I close on my new house!

Enjoy!
So none of the modern Limited or Special editions are based on the 149 besides the vintage Hemingway and Dumas?

The Hemingway and Dumas are based on the 139, not the 149. Most of the specialty MBs are based on the 146 or smaller ones and a few are based on even older models like the early eyedroppers.

The Skeleton MBs though are mostly based on the 149.

Thanks, had Googled and some seem to suggest that the Hemingway, Dumas and the current Homer are 149 based with 9 sized nibs.

Yes it is the #9 sized nib (third digit in MB model designation) but is patterned after the 139 which preceded the 149 and was more a domed ended rather than the Sheaffer like shape of the 149.

The 139 was made from the late 1930s until the early 1950s.

Thanks the info mate.
Also is the Agatha Christie serpent fountain pen a substantially sized pen like the 146 or is it more like the current line up serpent clip pen? Are they easy to come by and what price range in? New to this hobby:)

Sorry but that's one that never appealed to me so I really just don't have any answers.

Jim always causes me to appreciate the folks on this forum that are willing to share their wisdom with us. I should have known this!

Have to say that both of these FPs are two of my favorites from Montblanc's writers series.

Thanks Jim!

The Hemingway is very similar to a 139 from the 50s, just that the 139 14k nib has more flex than the Hemmie's 18k, even though both are size 9.

As for the Agatha, I'd say it's got much wider girth than the modern snake pens from MB. The Agatha is a pen, the modern snake ones are like pencils.
