Advice on value of a gilt 5512

Hi All!

I've read the guidelines and I believe that this is an appropriate question as I'm genuinely looking for advice/feedback from y'all before making a purchasing decision. Apologies and understand if it's not.

In a nutshell - talking to a dealer that is offering a '66 Gilt 5512. All parts seem to be period correct but not sure what to make of the condition (esp. dial) in terms of collector value. I included the photos I have. As you can see, the dial is not just patina'd, it does have some texture abrasion + weathering that is beyond what I typically would call "crazed".

Not to get into the prices discussed, but wondering if you think it's fair in the ~$18k range personally. Thoughts?

I would take the 18k and buy a minty 5513 matte dial and run from that one....it’s toast...unless you of course have NOS dial hand and insert lol

In a nutshell, no. It's a mess. The case, the insert (which is wrong) the hands and that dial, which is a complete and utter train wreck, are all horrible. It's beyond "aged" or "distressed" or even "heavily patina'd". It's just awful. And for Eighteen THOUSAND dollars, insulting.

As stated, that's more an 8k watch than an 18k watch...run away.

Not for 18k, not even for 8k because if I've 18k as budget, I'd buy another nice watch...as a 5513 !

Since the OP is asking the question, I'm going to assume he finds this watch appealing, and I can imagine that it could be a fun watch to wear around as a conversation piece. However, virtually every part of the watch we can see is either wrong (bezel insert) or in terrible condition (dial, case, bezel ring). Perhaps the movement has some value, but one would have to see it.

It's difficult to put a fair value on such an example. It's not a collectible piece, and the parts themselves have little value because most of them are poor. Since the parts are all bad, it's really not a candidate for restoration. One would have to buy it at a price where one would be happy wearing it as-is. Personally, I would find it hard to be interested even at half the asking price.

Wow. This whole things has really gotten crazy. I’m not vintage expert, just an admirer, but I can’t imagine even wearing that let alone spending money on it. You really think that is appealing?

I agree with recommendations to find a great matte 5513 in that price point range. I really enjoy my maxi Mk4

Thanks everyone - love y'all and exactly the feedback I was looking for. In full transparency I already moved on past thinking about buying this. I just wanted the feedback and to start a conversation (was just making sure I navigated the guidelines here correctly since I'm a relatively new poster).

Also - Barkburst dial, I think that's ACCURATE.

Why ask people to spend time looking at a watch that you're not interested in buying?

I was thinking about it and posted the q as soon as I got his price. Either way I wanted to see what others thought, and ultimately not ok with the condition and posted in real time when I exited the convo. Thanks everyone!

The question is a good one when you add the tangential extension, “what might have caused such deterioration?”

To my eye the dial experienced some exposure to moisture via a leaky gasket or long term storage in a highly humid environment. The discolored lume testifies to that. And the dial surface seems to have been colonized by some mold or mildew that has now gone dormant.

For that money, a pristine 5513 is well within reach:

Since the OP finds the watch appealing and me not, it is legit to tell him that imo I'd not buy it...It is not valuable nor nice to wear, etc...no reason to buy this crap...whatever the price woudl be...imo

Did you read the previous replies by the OP? Like, "I already moved on past thinking about buying this. "
