Speedmaster. The explorer doesn’t really do much for me but I love the iconic look of the moon watch.

Same here. No a bad option either way. You’re picking between great watches imo.

Need more detail about your thinking.

I was with a top seller last week and actually contemplated the same. He said the speedy will be crap on second hand market. Cool watch to add but don’t flip for it. Exp (like most Rolex) will retain value and possibly even appreciate a bit.

Speedy is a bit less practical with with less water resistance and manual wind (not a big deal to most). It is a bit more interesting to look at. The Exp is as simple as it gets. Still a beauty but understated beauty (possibly boring).

If I had to pick one, Explorer. If I had a Sub or GMT, or other sports Rolex, and was adding an Exp or speedy, it is a draw.

Can’t go wrong. Exp will be more liquid. Both super iconic. Speedy a bit more interesting.

In the same boat as the OP......I have the funds to purchase my first Rolex, and my heart is set on an Explorer. But the Speedy Pro intrigues me......I was born just after the moon landings and was named Neil.....so I feel I really should have a so called Moonwatch.

Who cares?

I forgot we were buying watches to flip and make money. People need to stop focusing on money so much. I get it, you don't want to spend 5000-10k-20k and lose +50% on it. You buy something because you love it.

If you can buy a speedmaster moon second hand even ones very new and you won't lose money on it. Buy at full rrp and you will.

Agreed. However, it is important to some people and it is a fact which can be disregarded if not relevant to you. When someone starts a “this vs that” thread, is it wrong to point out a fact?

I had a Speedmaster for 4 months and just got rid of it today for a Hulk so I'd go for the Exp1. Nice watch and thought I'd love it, but it didn't do it for me at all.

OP, you didn't say where in the US you're visiting, so we can't give you location-specific availability. Generally, you will have a much easier time sourcing a Speedmaster than any stainless steel sport Rolex, Explorer included. Any decent Omega AD should have Speedies in the case to view, although whether or not they will have the specific model you have in mind is another question. SS sport Rolexes are in very short supply worldwide, although the Explorer is a bit easier to obtain than something like a stainless Submariner or GMT. Still, the odds of walking into an AD and finding an Explorer sitting in the case are slim.

Perhaps if you say where you're going to be (beyond Schipol), people familiar with those areas can give you some specific recommendations of places to look.
I have no comment but just wanted you to know someone read your post.

Had it, sold it. Nice but it wore to small for me.

The Speedy with display back is an outstanding watch. A lot of folks prefer the hesalite crystal to the sapphire.

Here is a comparison of the hesalite crystal, and the "sapphire sandwich" front & back.
I really like the "And Only" but I look at the face 99% of the time. I think your pic is overly flattering to the Sapphire and I have to slightly disagree with a previous poster that stated the optical clarity was better on the Sapphire. I think the fuzzy halo significantly changes the character of the watch. Having said that We are arguing rims on a Ferrari and its just a fantastic watch regardless.
