New member, my sob story

Hello all from California, bay area. I recently retired and have wanted to own a Rolex watch for years and finally decided to give myself one as a retirement gift. I've always wanted a Submariner date, stainless but after searching authorized retailers in the bay area and finding none in stock, and long waiting lists I was discouraged. I finally found an authorized retailer who told me that if I paid cash for the watch they could promise delivery in approx. 2 months. This was the quickest anyone had offered to get the watch for me so I cut them a check, over 9000 dollars with taxes.

Well much to my pleasure they called me in about 30 days and said my watch was in. I went to the store and picked it up, everyone was very nice, removed all stickers and plastic and set up the watch while giving me instructions in it's use. I left the store at about 1 in the afternoon wearing my new Rolex and a huge grin.

Unfortunately, and much to my dismay, when I removed the watch later that night at about 10pm, I saw that it had stopped running at about 8pm. I know that an automatic watch should not have needed more winding but I tried to wind it anyway having been told that it could not be over wound. The watch did not start again. Since the following day was a holiday, I took the watch back to the store the next day, still less than 48 hours after receiving it. I had two requests, return my money or give me a new watch, same model, new serial number. Of course they wouldn't do it, they just took the watch and said they'd send it in for warranty repair. Needless to say I'm not happy about that, they said "one in million" but to me, I will now receive what I consider to be a refurbished watch. It ran for 7 hours and when I took it back it was inspected and found to be free of damage or signs of abuse. I'm wondering if I'm the only person in the world who bought a Rolex, brand new from an authorized dealer only to have the watch stop working on day one? Needless to say, my Rolex dream has been tarnished. Still waiting on the watch but its only been about 10 days since I returned it.

Unfortunately, things happen and not all Rolexes that are new are problem free. Yours is a very special case, but in no way is what you'll get back considered refurbished. It'll work just like intended and all you'll be out is a little time. And you'll have a beautiful model that will work correctly for years.

Most will say don't sweat it. It'll be set right. And you'll get back to enjoying retirement with that beautiful sidekick.

Sad story - hope it’s just a bump in the road and you have the Sub back soon.

Let’s hope they get it back to you quickly so you can keep on enjoying it. And as per above, it’s not refurbished by any means. Think of it more as a fine tuning. The nice thing is at least you know it’s been freshly serviced and should run for years to come without any further interventions !

Honestly, while certainly a speed bump, I’d be happy to have it opened by a service center.

All things mechanical will eventually fail. With all of the moving parts in these watches, it’s just the (bad) luck of the draw that one will leave the factory with a defective part. Having a human crack it open and inspect every part will likely guarantee that yours will run even better than most.

I bought a brand new Jaeger LeCoultre for my wedding. Within 30 days, it was randomly starting and stopping - whether on its watch winder or on my wrist.

I had to take it to my local JLC boutique, they sent it off and, sure enough, they confirmed it wasn't working properly (thought they didn't tell me why).

They're in the process of repairing it for me and I'm sure I'll get it back working flawlessly.

These things happen.

Be sad while you can't look at it on your wrist, but, know that you'll have a fine piece of craftsmanship on your wrist for the rest of your life when you get it back.
