Incoming!

Now I know that Movado isn't going to get anyone overly excited here, but this one is from roughly the Sixties and the watchmaker tells me that it has a Movado 246 mechanical movement in it. I know that it's about 34mm and it's in 18k gold. The dial is burgundy. It's also very thin.

The watchmaker will be calling me back with a little more information in a little bit.

I love it and I'll have it out of layaway, probably by next week.

Very cool dial Grady ... reminds me a bit of the new Panerai 932 gradient dial treatment.

I hope you enjoy it

Thank you, Brian.

It does indeed have a gradient dial, which I cannot see in this picture, and only saw it today when I went in to make a payment. I'm color impaired.

I'm very satisfied with it already.

Very nice! Movado made some classic watches over the years. They may have overdone it with the Museum watch (dot at 12), which was the first “nice” watch that I bought for my wife.

Thank you, Brandon. It took me awhile to get comfortable with buying the vintage watches. Finding good local sources has really helped.

I quite agree with that and I think that has to do with the change of hands in the late Nineties that's responsible for that trend.

I believe that Movado and Zenith were associated at the time of this watch's production, but I haven't confirmed that, as yet.

Looks great on you, love the shape of the case and the gold accents it nicely, and 34mm, personally, for more dressy watches, I prefer the smaller sizes, they seem to carry an understated class to them. That one hits it nicely.

Congratulations.....

Yes. I find a good reasonably priced CW21 watchmaker makes these old boogers more tolerable. I just paid $500 to have a 40’s Valjoux 22 and case overhauled. Would have cost a lot more had I just walked in the door somewhere.

It’s a 40’s Leonidas. They were bought by Hauer who were bought by Tag. Which makes it an honorary Tag Hauer.

Column week Chrono manual wind. She was a good eBay find. But I fear I am too deep to get out on this one between the purchase, service and strap.

That's a beautiful piece. You said you paid about $500. How deep are you now (if you don't mind my asking)?

Except for the movement, I have really found only a great big goose-egg, when it comes to this model.

The movement is a Movado 246 and the reference number is 246-214-094.

I'm not really worried about authenticity, but I want to get a serial number, as I read that Movado has complete records of their watch models, serial numbers, and production dates.

I had to look up disco volante, but I see exactly what you mean.

The round minimalist dial combined with the ovular case makes for in interesting look incorporating the traditional and the avant-garde--flying saucers.

Stunning! I would say it is definitely worthy of some excitement! Gorgeous dress watch with very unique design. It definitely says "rare vintage classic" and I am sure you will get years of pleasure wearing it.
Congratulations!

Thank you, gentlemen!

Here are some more pictures that I used to have the watch authenticated and also one that shows the reference number system that was used by Movado at the time of production.

When I bought this watch, Butterfield Jewelers agreed to do a full-service at no extra charge. Today, I stopped by to check on it and it was ready for pickup. That's Joe, the watchmaker, in the background.
