When I got my first Rolex last year, I got carried away by the whole brand. I studied the history, tried different models, etc. Still loving Rolex.
As a Bond-fan I found also Omega, just recently. I visited in Switzerland and next to our hotel there was a great Omega boutique. I got very fascinated by Omega’s history: the legacy of Speedmaster ”Moonwatch”, all the different Bond-models, Limited editions... I got very excited of these limited Apollo XVII 45th Anniversary -models, Seamaster limited Phelps -edition...
Then it truly hit me:
There are other brands! Rolex isn’t The Only One!!! Or is it???!
Through this process I found also Patek’s Worldtime 5230G!
Plenty of possibilities, a whole new world!
What to do?
Now I can truly see that this path is an endless path. With my current 6-Rolex-Collection I am about to add some Omega.

Had anyone walked the similar path?

Yes, while Rolex is king of the mid lux sports market, there are a whole heap of other watches out there.

The majority of watch collectors have yes. - There are however a lot of ROLEX collectors on this forum.
Variety is he spice of life, don’t just stop at Omega either

The best first step you can take with any hobby like this is to first discover what all is available. Then you should take time to research the different options with regards to history, options, design, details, quality, value, support, maintenance, and cost. Do your research and hang out with as many geeks and actual users in a number of different places (NOT JUST FANBOYS) as possible who might elevate your knowledge to the level you require as quickly as possible. Determine what your willing to spend and also determine what type of things work best for you.

Do your BEST to make as few mistakes as possible along the way.

The history of rolex is amazing. So many firsts and truly going from a tool watch, to the watch you aspired to have when you reached the top of your profession, to now a luxury watch.

The history of HH brands like AP and Patek is truly amazing as well and how they preserve the passion, history and art of fine watch making.

Then there are brands like RM and modern APs with crazy technical movements by APRP that are truly mind blowing.

So much fun learning about watches and what makes each brand special.

Getting to go to Geneva and Les Brassus to visit the original manufacture, museums and modern production facilities is WIS heaven.

Yes, have walked the path to other brands, but always end up on a path back to Rolex. For whatever reason, Rolex makes watches I prefer over others. The ventures to other brands have generally been costly paths for me. Lost my *** on a couple of those moves.

- Fortunately the majority of the users on this forum know the above is not true.

There are numerous other brands that one can enjoy, starting from the very top of haute horologie (Kari Voutilainen, Philippe Dufour, Laurent Ferrier or Roger W. Smith), continuing with high end watches (Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe or A. Lange & Söhne) and so on.
I also think there is a lot in enjoyment to be had with owning cheaper brands like Casio, Orient or Sinn.
People are different, thankfully there is a lot to choose from for everyone.

Mistakes are part of this business, I think... but the good side is: when you have guts to experience different watches&brands, you will find what you can truly appreciate!

So very true. Been at this a long time. Made mistakes with other brands and Rolex. LOL, took about 30 years to settle in to what would work for me for a small collection. Most of the mistakes were around "dress" watches and trying to fit into the mold of what should be in a collection and what is really considered a dress watch. In the end I have finally concluded I am not a dress watch guy. Does not make any sense to tie up those resources in a watch I only wear a handful of times a year. While I love to look at and admire some of the finer dress watches out there, I will just admire them from afar....

I walked it backwards. I started with other brands.

rolex is everywhere and most mid sized cities have an AD selling them. Its natural for Rolex to be the entry to a luxury watch, and then move into other brands that are not as widespread. Then you appreciate a different kind of watchmaking. I still go back to Rolex though in addition to other brands. Most people dont jump straight to Patek or ALS and they also dont leave Rolex entirely when they do.

Besides just being everywhere it's generally the first thing that comes to mind for most of those not even shopping for one.
