Should I take the hit

It's been a while but I have that itch that can only be scratched one way....a new watch! I've had my beautiful two tone for years now and love it. I purchased a Panerai 389 almost two years ago and do not get to wear it as often as I'd like given it's size and it's has fallen out of favor. Would love to get into a BLNR and/or Explorer II.

Panerai do not retain their value as well as Rolex and although I did well with the Panerai purchase i would still be taking a couple grand hit.

Do I take the hit and make up the difference and buy a new Rolex?

I love reading crap like this from the haters who clearly know nothing about the brand.

Panerai has been around since 1860, which is about 45 years longer than Rolex, so it's hardly a 'trendy' brand.

That's about the most favorable view of panerai you could have. How many of those years did they continuously make watches? Farm equipment and other stuff doesn't really count.

I have no idea what you're point is or what you're driving at here but as far as I'm aware, they've made timepieces continually from the beginning. I'm no authority on Panerai so I'm happy to be educated by someone with knowledge of the brand. I'm not interested in BS from haters and the ignorant.

I'm a fan of Panerai. I wear them out of love for the brand and the timepieces themselves. No one puts a gun to your head to make you buy them. Wear what you love and love what you wear

They manufactured depth gauges, compasses and other precision instruments for the navy.

Given the shared heritage of Rolex and Panerai, it's disappointing to read the inevitable negative comments in these types of threads. Doesn't happen on P.com (about Rolex).

Regarding value retention, Panerai does no worse than many other brands.

WJGESQ has a perpetual hard-on for any and all brands that are not Rolex (except, of course, for those he happens to own or has owned), and posts accordingly, used to troll the AP and Patek forums until he got put on notice. And even within the Rolex family, he tends to throw shade on (surprise, surprise) models other than the Sub, which he just happens to own (the Hulk, which is, of course, the very very very best model that Rolex makes). Early Panerai Radiomir cases were designed by Rolex and the watches used Rolex movements. Panerai were military suppliers from 1930s - 1990s.

@OP - I would hang on to the 389 and maybe switch out the strap to freshen its appeal (one of the fun aspects of Panerai ownership). Taking a big hit and then buying another watch that will also depreciate (if not as much) makes no sense to me. Nice to have some contrast in a collection.

Yep. That's why I've stayed with Rolex. I don't ever plan to sell, but you never know. Buying right is also key. The only reason I have an AP is because it was an incredible deal. As long as I don't beat the crap out of it, I can flip it and get all my money back. However, it's my favorite SS watch and I have zero intentions of selling.

I agree. Take the hit now - I decided to ''take the hit'' on 3 Breitlings under a year old and it was severe to say the least, but I bought 3 Rolex to replace them and I couldn't be happier.

Your right unfortunately they don't retain. I could be wrong but I feel like they are at an all-time low right now. I would take the hit and got for the BLNR. But that's just me. Good luck!
