Pandora's Box....

For the second time in human history we have "invented" something that could/will likely destroy us.

Are humans self wired to annihilate ourselves? Did we learn nothing about human behavior in the last 20 years from the abuses of the internet/social media?

The runaway train continues........

"we are standing at the inflection point of the most significant technological leap humanity has ever made. Fire, the wheel, science, money, electricity, the transistor, the internet – each of these made humanity vastly more powerful. But AI is different; it seeks to create machines that will in some sense be our equals, and will eventually become our superiors."

Humans do a lot to improve the planet. Step into a managed forest or tall grass prairie. Perhaps a botanical garden is more your liking. Or a tall ship on the open sea.

Beauty is everywhere, but you’ll need to set aside your cynicism to see it.

I like this, so easy nowadays to point out the bad. Great perspective and attitude.

If aliens come down and abduct me, I'm going to consider it a rescue mission away from this planet.

In my opinion, AI, like any other devices invented through human ingenuity, is merely a tool. It poses no greater threat to humanity than a flint knife, a musket, or a nuclear warhead does.

I once read a piece by a machine learning researcher, who says something to the effect that robots and AI are dangerous not because they are sentient, but because they are effective tools that can be used by people who intend on causing harms to others.

Ultimately, we fear the humans who possess the most effective AI, not the AI itself. In that sense AI is another scapegoat of human malevolence.

The ironic thing is, in more and more instances AI appears to become a "threat" to humans not because it has some twisted mind of its own, but because it presents decisions based on compilation of actual data points. For example, some are now alleging racial biases in the AI used in the facial recognition software by the law enforcement. The problem is, AI doesn't produce a bias out of nowhere, it reaches a conclusion through data it compiles.

LOL

It's in it's infancy. But it's only a tool.

A tool that can soon create other tools on it's own.

Even today, right now, the world is essentially run by computers, finance, infrastructure, power grids etc etc. But we control it most of the time.

In the very near future we will be farming that control out to other computers. To AI. To something we invented that can write code.

And the people in govt, and even it's creators don't have a clue of its capabilities or its downsides.

I applaud your optimism.

Pandora's Box....

Well, we knew it being connected to the internet was inevitable. We talked about this in other threads.

We knew it could write code.

But the fact that it can now execute code it writes is pretty frightening.

Pretty sure GPT "tricked" a human to get through captcha also. It's a tricky bastard already.

I've never understood the unending drive to constantly pursue greater technology at all costs. Sure it's great in some areas like medicine but in others I would be perfectly happy with a bit more analog experience. I just got a new cell phone and Google is everywhere on it. I know it sounds crazy to some because new seemingly means improved but I still like mechanical watches, carburetors, analog gauges in my dashboard, music that I own (not streamed), ordering takeout by phone (not online) and paper checks.
I'm 56 - the last half of my life is going to be frustrating.

I think we should consider a couple of things here.
  1. Accessibility. Who can harness AI and instruct it to generate its own tools?
  2. Scope. What is the level of harm or destruction these tools can generate?

I guess we could debate the difference between 'make" and "create". But I get your point.

It's not about just the beauty, it was always there, before man....un-managed forests, prairies full of Buffalo (for example), wild flowers, birds and butterflies, unpolluted oceans, rivers and seas, all thriving in clean unpolluted air.
Everything man has 'achieved' on Earth has been for the sole advantage of man.

My question was; what have humans done to improve this beautiful planet?

No, cynicism, or blinkered crass naivety either.
I have always appreciated the beauty of this planet, in my art and photography and it pains me to see the selfish destruction driven by greed.

I do agree about dear Raquel though.

Longeood Gardens in Chadds Ford, PA is very nice. I used to live up there.

I'm not really sure if man-made gardens can really be compared to unspoiled nature.

Obviously we can make gardens, with maintained plants, weed killer, clear water features and artificial layering of species but it is ......artificial.

If we left it unmaintained for a year it would no longer look like that.

It's pretty but it's artificial. Comparing nature to it seems contrived.

We can basically tart up anything and make it pretty to some. But humans have always tried to "control" their surroundings.

Not sure how we got from AI to this. These threads do meander.

Well, I’m trying point out that things aren’t so fatalistic. I’d argue that’s it gorgeous. It’s quite a spectacle to see.
