Do you ever get comments whilst wearing a Patek?

Do people recognize your watch? Particularly more hype pieces such as the Aquanaut or Nautilus, and if so, do you find this to happen more at upscale venues?

A little, even in the Midwest. But we are back to long sleeve weather so that helps.

Saw another patron while my wife and I were having dim sum in California. He had a 5980. I commented that it was nice , and I’d love to have one. Nice guy, he said same to you. I had my AP 15400 on. I said I’d pay for his lunch if he let me swap watches with him. We laughed together.
That was the only time. Had a lot of other nice watch comments when I wore my GS.

I've never had a comment about my Aquanaut. I did get a comment once from a cafe owner about my 5712 as he was also a watch collector and wanted to know how I got my hands on one. We had a good chat.

I did get a compliment recently about my 5320G-011, but it was more about how it was a nice looking watch than anything else.

Meanwhile when I used to wear Rolex, I would get people picking up on those that a lot more. Especially when the jubliee Pepsi came out and I was wearing that. I think Rolex is just a lot more recognisable than PP.

Just once in the Aquanaut. A waiter at a cafe (young gent) commented “Really nice watch! Is that an Aquanaut?”
That was years ago though. 2019ish

A lot of conversation at the local watch club get togethers and in my AD's with owners. Not much out in the real world though. Not just PP but any watch that does not scream for attention due to PM or size.

Only once with my Pateks (all dress references); friend looked at my 5127g and said “that watch is beautiful, simple but beautiful”. He did not recognize the reference/model, just appreciated the aesthetic. Only other time with any of my watches was when I was out and a stranger said “nice watch!” - that was when I had a Royal Oak on.

I was in the parking wearing my my 5167 on a Fly Yellow rubber strap. I was talking with a friend of mine when his 16 year old son walked over to ask me if that was a PATEK? I asked him "what did you say?" He said "Is that a Patek Philippe?" I asked him, "How do you know about Patek Philippe?"

I no longer wear my Patek or any high end watch to the park.

People only care about the hype watches. My Aquanaut gets a lot of wows from the watch community. Normal people don't bat an eye. Less familiar people speak up more when they see me wear a Rolex.

I had a 5065 on green straps recognized by a young man working at WholeFood. I took it off and handed it to him while we chatted Patek for a minute. He walked with me and helped filled my grocery list. He credited Hodinkee for his new hobby.

Exactly so! Stealth wealth. PP owners are all thought to be loaded - post-purchase not so much!

Sadly, Nautilus and Aquanaut have joined the Rolex eye catching club which must make for a certain amount of paranoia when wearing them in crowded cities/places.

At a Patek AD, yes.

Everywhere else no.

Desk clerk at Virgin Australia complimented me on my 5930G. He said it was very nice, and asked what kind of watch it is. Brief conversation, but only notice/comment outside of other watch friends.

Almost never while traveling the world, except in Singapore (couple of times). About ten years ago without much worry rode the subways in Milano and Munchen quite a bit wearing a 3970er or the Aqua, no one seemed to care / recognize.

2 nights ago, I sat to the left of a friend of mine at the dinner table. My 5205G was away from him on my left wrist, and partially covered by my shirt cuff, and it would not have been possible to read the "Patek Philippe" branding easily. Midway through the evening, he leaned over and casually remarked, "that is a beautiful watch. Lovely."

My friend wears a Garmin Instinct as his daily watch, and knows nothing about watches at all. It is the 3rd or 4th time someone has complimented me on the 5205G, and all of them are non-watch people. My 5212A has also garnered a casual comment before too.

When you look at the format of the 5205G, the inky blue black and crisp white face, and the concave/convex case curves and sculpted lugs, it truly is a work of art - regardless of what name is written on it. Coming from non-watch people, it is the ultimate compliment imho.

Did he reply to your question? I would be impressed if a 16 y.o. knows about PP. My 16 y.o. nephew knows and reads about luxury brands because of me.

I know the underlying sentiment of this question, or at least inevitably the replies, is negative… and undoubtedly, the popularity of these hype pieces has created a lot of non productive attention. However, one of my favorite aspects of watches was, and continues to be, that they connect together an “insider” community- because as others have pointed out, the broad population still does not care about watches at all.

So, my story, which is actually positive: I was at a fountain pen show, walking down the aisle way, and I walked straight past a booth without looking, focused on something else. All of a sudden I hear “oh, an aquanaut!” in reference to the 5164 I was wearing. So I immediately stop and pivot, and notice a very finely dressed gentleman behind the booth. We got to talking, and it turned out that he had previously owned a 5167, but had sold it (I believe to help bootstrap his pen company), and had always regretted. Anyhow, to abbreviate, we really hit it off and I began collecting his pens, and now we have a nice little friendship.

Last time (and only time) that somebody noticed my ex-5712r, he and his two algerian robbers friends almost beat me to death to steal the watch. And that happened in switzerland on a sunny saturday afternoon at a major city train station.

No luck I guess, wrong time, wrong place

At the Country Club, or even having cocktails with polite company, almost nobody will ogle your watch let along comment on it. Chances are good that they are wearing one just as nice.

If that is what you really want, I've noticed that the department store 60mm pave' fashion watches get a lot of notice.
