Basically you should buy every aquanaut and nautilus you can get

I'm not a proponent of spending tens of thousands of dollars on a material good "just because". Things can always go the other way and I am strict about living within my means and only spending discretionary income on watches.

That said, I still have a very distinctive memory of going to Razny's in downtown Chicago on Christmas Eve 2017 when the Nautilus craze was already heating up. 5980/1R, 5711/1R, 5164R, 5167R, 5980/1AR, 5980R were all in the showcase, and I was even offered a sealed grey 5726/1A from the vault. And now taking a look at the secondary prices... that would have been a 6 figure profit if I had the gumption and resources to buy them all!

5980/1r. i would have been happy with that one only. Those were the good old days ....last year. saves me from chopping off Ninja's arm in 2019 to get his.

I would agree buying any of these pieces at retail is the way to go if you do like the piece and will enjoy wearing it. Otherwise, why bother.

Yes....Razny offered me a 5712 in late 2017 at the price of $33,400. Now about 9 months later they basically told me to fck off...funny how demand goes. I didn't want to sell my 1964 Gilt Sub to get the Nautilus so I passed....shame.

I should have bought the 5711/1R. I've now bitterly accepted I'll never again have the opportunity to have one at a reasonable price.

I'm 32 and the point is well taken. It's been a 10 year bull market since 2008/2009. We didn't have say $2-$3M in the market and lost 50% in 3 months..our parents did

Our generation has not gone through a full bear market yet or had enough net worth to be adversely affected by a giant financial crisis.

This is what has been happening with model after model until only the gold ones were left and now even those ginger-haired stepsons are being adopted sight unseen.

Indeed Nautilus are "investment grade" watches, funny to call watches that but looks like it. Along with some of my AP royal oaks, they are doing better than some of the shares I owned.

For Nautilus, even the gold ones are highly sought after. I was floored to learn how much my 5711-1R has appreciated in secondary market.

Fair enough but I disagree. It’s had an effect on how I view the markets substantially.

One of the greatest poets of our generation said...

To seize everything you ever wanted
In one moment
Would you capture it
Or just let it slip?

thats why i give some credibility to the chrono24 ask prices that are approaching 100k. There are a couple over that number. Most are still in the mid to high 80's though. Its headed that way at the current rate

I simply don’t recognise all the talk of ‘good times,’ etc. I work in the public sector in the UK and working conditions have got worse every year for the past 10 years. 40% lower salary than where I should be compared with a decade ago. Financial austerity without end. We’re in a complete mess and a divided society.
It comes down not just to where you live, of course, but the circles you mix in and the company you keep.
Just wanted to provide a rather different perspective. Things are not at all rosy in the garden from where I’m standing...

Interesting post, and I wholeheartedly agree with your view of the UK’s (sad) situation.

Slightly abstract reading such a realistic view of things here on the Patek Philippe forum!
