Who’s the best friend of a 5712/1A?

Hello everyone,

I know all of this is down to personal taste but could still be interesting to have your personal input/feedback on this one.

Inside the nautilus/aquanaut collection what would be your choice to pair with a 5712/1A? Can be PM, SS, bracelet, strap...everything EXCEPT fancy dials and bezels (I.e. diamonds and any kinds of stones).

5167R for me.

Thanks

5164A traveltime GMT. You get best of both worlds in terms of function. 5712 complication with moonphase, power reserve (which very few pateks even have that function) and the 5164a gives a more outgoing, sporty casual watch which really does go unnoticed and perfect for travelling as you can set two time zones and the hidden 2nd timezone skeleton hour hand which hides under the local is amazing.

The rubber strap is durable when cut to size and does not fade/wear away (mine shoes no wear signs after wearing it most times of the week for 9 month +) If it doesn't fit in the budget, you can go for a 5167 but then you would have 2 time only watches with no additional features such as GMT/Chronograph. If you dont care for a GMT, the next option is the 42mm aquanaut chrono 5968A.

Depends on what you're looking for really. a AC, PCC or something simple. But for a 2 watch patek collection, a 5712 & 5164 go quite nicely

5164 for sure. Then again I would say the 5712 is a good compliment to the 5164 as it’s me favorite

Good points you made here and within budget. The only reason I thought the 5167R was a better match when looking at all the possibilities was the fact it was PM vs another SS. Additional to that (but that is down to personal taste) I felt like the date on the 5164A was weird and I didn’t know how the shape of the watch with those additional buttons would feel on the wrist.

Anyway guess you are still right for all the arguments you pointed out and it could be a very good choice too...

Am on the 5712/1A + 5164A team as well. These two complement each other very well:

- Beautifully finished steel bracelet vs. practical rubber strap
- Classic Nautilus thinness vs. slightly more modern and hefty Aquanaut
- Romantic Moon phase vs. useful and practical GMT complication
- Classic 240 "micro rotor" movement vs. modern 324 movement
- Gorgeous blue-grey gradient Nautilus dial with stick indices vs. more casual gradient grey-black "globe-in-globe" dial with applied numerals

Oh and I actually like the date sub-dial on these models as it reminds me of the classic PPCs (3970, 5970 etc.)

Anyway, my money is where my mouth is:

OP... did your dad give you his 5712 or did you find an other one? I remember that thread. Awesome if he gave it to you

Didn’t give it to me (poor guy would have had it for only 2 months or so! Let him enjoy it a bit!) and didn’t find another one (not looking for one anyway). He is the one wanting to buy another one (I mentionned in this old thread that even if he didn’t like the buying experience he will want another one sooner or later).

We discussed about the 5167R and I told him I will look around to see what could be the other options.

I prefer not to chose watches based on what complements another watch. You can end up settling for second best, or if your collection changes you may lose the balance you had before. I’d go for the 5990.

Damn you.... cannot wait for my 5712 to complete my 5164a/5711a white/5172 trio.

Either 5711 white, 5990 or rose gold 5711

5740 IMHO is too similar to the 12 so not an option for me.

I would take a stab that the best friend of a nautilus is a Royal Oak :)

If you had to choose within the aquanaut/Nautilus collection I would go either colored metal or a complication like annual calendar or perpetual calendar or chronograph...

I have the 5712 and I think my next Patek will be a 5711R. Great combo if you ask me.

initially, I had the 5164 to partner up with the 5711, but decided the 5712 would work better in combination

Me too even with the 12a, I prefer the 64 in SS to RG as well, but that might be a better pair, brushed gold finish is divine.

5712 and 5164 too similar in my view design wise.

I have a 5712r which i think is already ‘modern pp’. I would go more traditional next... 3940r?
