5227R or...

I know this is the PP section of TRF but still I´d like to hear your thoughts as all these pieces are quite different but still in a similar price range. Please explain why you´ve made your choice.
  1. Patek 5227R
  2. FP Journe Chronometre Souverain with gold dial in either RG or PT
  3. Rolex DD40 in either YG, WG or RG

Oh tough one!

I really do love the 5227R and nearly voted that, but DD 40 WG inched in just a little... I think. My mind flips between those two every second!

Very tough Poll...

When putting across the board a DD40 vs 5227 is hard to choose from, both pro's and con's.

The two stand out being complication differences and waterproof depth ratings.

I have voted 5227R due to it being higher up the list for me personally and is less common & much more understated.

Depends on other items in the collection - for an only watch the DD40 cant be beat due to the water resistance and metal bracelet - can be worn with a suit or with shorts and a polo shirt. If part of a small collection the 5227 is probably the one. In a larger collection would go with the FPJ as something unusual.

Tough one as I owned a 5227 and a DD. Both are gone.
However, I don’t miss the DD and looking forward to Basel for maybe a new Calatrava.
To have one as an only, I do agree with the DD as the choice , a lot
more versatile but please only buy a DD if you can get the fit of the bracelet spot on.
It’s a heavy watch , if it
moves around or is too tight there is no adjustability.

If you want a classic dress watch, get the 5227. Simple elegance is what Calatravas are known for. I have never been a fan of the DD, unless it is platinum as I feel it is just too common, like a Sub or DJ. But if you regularly surround yourself with others who wear a DD, getting a DD(40) would be a good option. Get the FPJ if you want something different that you won't see on other people's wrist.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Other watches in my collection are: SubC 116610LN, YG SubC 116618LB, PP 5167A on strap, blue 5711/1A and vintage YG Omega Seamaster on strap.

All three watches have their very own pros and cons:

DD40

Pros:
  • A real classic in YG with champagne dial
  • Very nice and subtle in WG
  • Depth rating
  • Low cost to service and 5 years warranty
  • Full PM President bracelet

Cons:
  • No micro adjustment of President bracelet

5227R

Pros:
  • Beautiful case design with hunter case back
  • Ivory dial and RG case make a perfect combination

Cons:
  • Depth rating
  • Third 324SC watch in my collection
  • Quite expensive for a simple three handed watch

FP Journe CS

Pros:
  • Great case design and awesome gold dial
  • Platinum case
  • Beautiful RG movement
  • Rare view in the wild

Cons:
  • Depth rating
  • Higher service pricing
  • No AD nearby

The cons totally kill it for the 5227 IMO. I voted DD40 and would probably do WG to tone the bling down a bit.

Had the DD40 in WG and sold it as I didn’t wear it that much. It’s a bit of a statement piece to say the least. I bought a 5227 in and loved it apart from the fact you have to angle the watch occasionally to reflect the light off the hands. Also in a low light environment like a bar / restaurant it’s very hard to see the actual time. Seriously thinking about moving the 5227 and getting a DD40 back with a white dial and the Roman numerals. That is a really lovely piece.

I´m quite surprised that the Journe doesn´t get more love on here.

Yes, there are quite a few cons speaking against the 5227 but it´s like one of these girls you´d still like to date even you know she means lots of trouble.

About the DD40 being a statement piece I´m not worried too much as I wear a YG Sub frequently.

After seeing what else you own I think the Journe is the best choice. It's a small production independent brand that you don't own and is a beautiful watch. It adds depth to your collection and provides a change of scenery.
If this was a "one watch" choice I would the prefer the DD40.

All three are very nice watches but I would go with the DD. It is more wearable day to day and you can pick several different dial configurations.

As much as I like the two others I also have a feeling that the DD will be more suitable for an active lifestyle being the most robust with a metal bracelet and depth rating.

I still think a DD should be YG which brings me to the point that I don´t like the current dial options for YG. It´d be down to black motif or champagne stick for me. WG I could go for black, black diamond or olive roman.

Tough choice...
