Watch Art Grand Exhibition 2023 in Tokyo Shinjuku

Fancy a trip to Tokyo in Summer 2023? Here's another excuse to go there

https://www.patek.com/en/company/new...ion/tokyo-2023

For the sixth of its Grand Exhibitions across the world, Patek Philippe has chosen Japan.

From 10 to 25 June 2023, the public and devotees will be able to immerse themselves in the world of the last remaining independent family-owned Genevan watch manufacture. They will discover a decor of more than 2,500 square meters transporting them to the atmosphere of the streets of Geneva and the lakeside and taking them behind the scenes of Patek Philippe itself.

The largest exhibition ever organized by the manufacture, this event will bring together some 500 timepieces and objects and will be accompanied by the launch of several limited editions.

The Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition Tokyo 2023 will be held in a place emblematic of the host city. It will take over the Sumitomo Sankaku Hiroba, located among the soaring towers of the Nishi-Shinjuku business district.

Divided into ten themed areas, the exhibition will invite the visitor on a voyage of discovery through the Patek Philippe universe, including all the brand’s most renowned Geneva sites – the historic headquarters in the rue du Rhône, the manufacture at Plan-les-Ouates and the Patek Philippe Museum.

As heir to the great Genevan tradition, Patek Philippe has always placed great importance on sharing its love of fine watchmaking, notably by means of exhibitions.

Ten years ago, Patek Philippe went a step further by launching a new concept of Grand Exhibitions open to the public, offering free admission and encouraging closer acquaintance with its creations, heritage, philosophy and breadth of expertise.

In the course of the five editions organized to date these events have increased in size and scope, welcoming a total of some 165, 000 visitors.

After Dubai in 2012, Munich in 2013, London in 2015, New York in 2017 and Singapore in 2019, Patek Philippe has chosen Tokyo for its sixth Grand Exhibition.

Ticketing opening : March 2023.

"5330G World Time Date. What's special about this watch is that it is the very first World Time model to feature a date indication synchronized with local time. This was effectuated by the development of the 240 HU C caliber, which itself is based on the ultra-thin self-winding 240 HU. It is equipped with a patented differential system for managing the local-time date.

To solidify this as a special limited edition for the exhibition, certain design cues call out to Japan distinctly, like the red Tokyo text and Japanese rising sun emblem in place of the usual sun symbol. Patek filed two patents on the date red-tipped date display illustrated on the beveled flange, which is made of glass. This 40mm World Time will see a larger, yet still limited, release of 300 pieces."

"Next up is the ref. 5531R – which plays upon a deep lineage of Patek World Time watches but adds a minute repeater by way of the self-winding R 27 HU caliber. The patented striking mechanism allows the chime to play for local time for the time zone displayed at 12 o'clock on the dial.

Speaking of the dial, it is done in Grand Feu cloisonné enamel. Normally, on these watches, we get more of a traditional map design in the continental sense. For the exhibition, what we have here is a beautiful map of central Tokyo. The case features a hand-guilloched hobnail pattern, and this, too, will see a limited run of only 15 pieces."

"Quadruple Complication 5308P, a platinum split-seconds chronograph sporting both a minute repeater and an instantaneous perpetual calendar. This 42mm (by 17mm thick) piece of absolute horology is large, but the size allows for some serious watchmaking. The Self-winding R CHR 27 PS QI caliber (with platinum mini-rotor) provides this monopusher chronograph and perpetual calendar with an instantaneous date change at midnight each night.

The main news here is that this is an update to the ref. 5208, which was originally launched in 2011. That watch was the very first Patek to contain an aperture-based perpetual calendar, chronograph, and minute repeater – and was thus a triple complication. Here, Patek and its watchmaking team have been able to add a split-seconds function to the watch, hence the "quadruple" in the name.

Now we have seen the 5208 in a variety of metals in the past, including titanium for Only Watch. But this 5308, with its platinum case and that killer salmon dial, really feels like a refresh for this design, and a powerful one at that. Like all of the releases today, this will only be available in Tokyo in conjunction with the exhibition and is limited to just 15 pieces."

Thanks Ichiran, the 5230 color reminds me a little of the nice Hamilton & Inches (Scotland) 5130 limited edition. Very good looking combination.

That's a new ref 5330, an upgraded version of the 5230 with a date on the outer ring. It is slightly bigger (40mm) than the 38.5mm 5230.

Yes indeed the habit of writing 5230 :p I didn't notice the 40mm though. They thus made a bigger 5230 like they did a bigger 5930 with the 5935. To each wrist his own^^

I like that they have a standard case back on the simple Calatrava’s with engraving as opposed to the etching on a crystal. Unfortunately they kind of look like upgraded Nomos pieces, I don’t think these will trade for much of a premium.

The complicated pieces are fire!

I was not authorised to take any photos or videos but in the VIP section, Patek had a VR machine whereby you can wear the goggles and take a controller to assemble a minute repeater caliber virtually and then hear it as you complete it. Thought that was pretty innovative (digitally speaking) from a company like Patek!

Very cool exhibit. Highly recommend for Patek fans. I'm not VIP enough to do the immersive VR mentioned but I thought the sound immersion did minute repeaters and Grand sonnerie was cool as hell.

Haha when Larry P was head of NA I mentioned to him maybe 8 years ago they should do a VR setup where you can go inside the movements.
