How much total watches would make up the ideal collection for YOU?? Just wondering about this subject. I personally do not like to collect via the chronograph-gmt-diver-beater method, i rather just buy whatever i like than covering certain bases, perhaps even collect more on different colours even...… What do you all think ???

3-5 camp for me. Had 10+ for a long time and sold off a bunch a few years back. I do not care about covering segments either, more about what I like and having some different colors. If they made Subs in more colors, I would only have Subs lol.

I was up to 9, down to 7 and likely will drop down more once I score the 5712. I am now of the mindset that less is more and I really enjoy wearing all of them. With 9, I never wore some and I hate that. Even with 7, many sit. I think 3-5 is the right number.

I think 3-4 ought to make many happy.

A daily, a dress, a sports and a vintage.

That gives you options when 1 or 2 need to be away at the spa for rejuvenation.

I think 8 would be my target number

1. First nice watch (Rolex K series SD)
2. Birth watch 1981 Rolex
3. Modern Rolex (probably new DSSD or 43mm SD)
4. SS AP RO
5. Skeleton AP RO RG
6. Complicated AP (tourbillon offshore)
7. Sport SS Patek (some larger Nautilus maybe 5990)
8. Complicated Patek (5270P)

The modern rolex, AP RO and SS Patek would be daily beaters and then have a complicated but casual sport watch (offshore), Skeleton RG for some bling and the 5270p for dress. First nice watch and birth year would have sentimental value.

I own around 30 watches if I count some G-Shock, other quartz, pocket watches etc. It may be too many but I have a personal history with every one of them. My first Swiss watch, the ones I bought from my (5) watchmakers in almost thirty years, watches I bought on trips, the ones I got from collectors I know etc. I love them all but I won't say this is ideal. Just works for me.

I voted five. I will always own a Rolex, Patek Phillipe, Vacheron Constantin and a Ulysse Nardin. My next desired watch is a AP Royal Oak. I have a few that I could sell but they would not make enough difference in the AP price to matter.

All of my watches except the UN were purchased used, not necessarily because I wanted vintage but because I could not afford them new.

I’ve gone through several phases of watch ownership through the years, and I have come to the conclusion that 4-6 good pieces is perfect. One watch per brand, stay with the icons, with one from the Holy Trinity, and one nice vintage piece. Necessary brands for me being Rolex, Omega, JLC, and Patek.

Nah it’s all good.

Thing is, there are what, tens of thousands of different watches you can buy? Cost aside, it’s difficult to limit yourself to a finite number. I don’t have a huge collection (8) but I’ve only really been collecting for a couple of years.

The thing is, collecting watches doesn’t necessarily mean spending lots of money. I love my Rolexes but my favourite watch currently is a Seiko of the non Grand variety.

I'm not crazy about getting owned by the 'collecting' thing but to be honest, if cost and family influences were not there, I would probably like to have a different quality watch for each day of the week. Probably be 4 Rolex, 2 VC and an IWC.

Most of the time, i am a natural collector... But with Rolexes it seems to be a bit less as they first of all cost a loads of money to me... Second of all is since i bought my explorer 2 after my sub it looks like there is some kind of balance in this 2 pieces... And i am afraid to damage that balance when i buy a 3d... But i think i will add something colorfull like a HULK. or so later on... White black and something color
