Walt Disney

Been reflecting upon the importance of Mr. Disney the last few days.

It truly is unbelievable the contributions he's made to the happiness of millions.

From the visionary movies to the theme parks . . .

Cheers, Walt!

Have to agree with the gorilla in the room He was definitely an entertainment visionary who made millions of people happy and gave parents all over the world a destination. From what I've read the only people not so enamored with old Walt was the people that worked for him (not unusual for driven people).

He unwittingly began an institution when penning Mickey. But made a conscious contribution to children forever by expanding into the Disney parks.

We take our 3 year old son 3 to 4 times a month to DLand. And each time we get the some reaction from him...a big smile and singing small world. Can't ask for much more than to see the joy that it brings to our son each time. It's a place where an adult can be a kid and relive the childhood memories.

Cheers Walt! You did a great job!

If you want an interesting perspective on Walt Disney, read the book "Walt Disney: Hollywood's Dark Prince"...

He also had a dark side too, but so did Henry Ford and Charles Lindburg.

Well true enough, but what also made Windows such a success was allowing the user to navigate and command with a mouse click rather than the previous "C" Prompt keyboard commands.

My wife is an Accounting Manager for Disney in the Cunsumer Products division specifically toys. Its pretty cool since we have two young daughters. They gave her and some co-workers a behind the scenes tour of Disneyland and the information she came back with was amazing. Here are a few things I remember...during its construction and for a time after the opening he lived in an apartment right above the fire station near the front entrance. The apartment is still there and unchanged. You will notice that there is a light on that is visable from Main st. He would have this on to let employees know he was there. Now it stays on perminatley. Rachael said that not very many people get to see it and the inside is really cool and just how he left it. When the park first opened they had real alligators in the Jungle Cruise but they escaped a few times so for obvious reasons the alligators had to go. Near the Pirates of the Caribbean if you listen carefully you will hear a constant clicking noise. It's Walt's opening day speech being replayed in morris code. On opening day women found that their heels were sinking into the asphalt as it wasn't completely dry. Opening day was kind of a train wreck as they ran out of food and some of the toilets overflowed. There's a bunch more cool stuff about Walt and the parks if you search the internet. One really cool thing for my family is that once you've been with the company for a while you can apply for a program that lets you go to the park and walk around in a character outfit. She was Chip from Chip and Dale. To see my daughters reaction was really neat. I have to say that Disney has taken very good care of my wife and as you can imagine having two little girls with a mom that works for Mickey Mouse has been a blast.
