Breitling SuperOcean Chrono will not start after winding

Hello TRF,

I have had my Breitling for 15 years and never had a single issue. Today, I went to wind my watch to wear it after sitting for four days (normal practice) and even after winding 40+ times, the seconds hand will not start moving.

This has never happened to me before. The watch is stored face up in a box, wrapped around a role. Everything feels normal when I wind it.

Any advice?

-Thanks

Did you give the head of the watch a little tap with the palm of your hand??

So does this mean the watch is working now?

It started working fifteen minutes later and then lost time after 30 minutes. I wound it some more, and it seems to be working and keeping time now.

I am going to wear it for a week and monitor it. Very strange!

Try this power reserve test. You need to not wear the watch during the test..... When you get home in a very quiet place, wind it up 40-60 times and put the watch up to your ear. When your watch is fully wound, you will hear a slight tick-click...tick-click besides the sound of the normal winding noise as you wind it slowly. This is the internal clutch slipping indicating the watch is fully wound. Some times you can feel the clutch slip through the winding stem if you do this very slowly. This does not hurt the movement and it is designed to do this.
Once you know your watch is fully wound, sit the watch in a stationary place and don't touch it. You then periodically monitor as the power runs down until the watch stops. What we are looking for is to see if your main spring is broken. If it is, your power reserve will be significantly less. You should be able to get 40+ hours of power reserve with a full wound watch sitting without any movement. It's a good idea to do this power reserve test every year or so. It's a great way to monitor your watches health.

This is fantastic advice, thank you for taking the time to post.

I will report back :)

How long has it been since it's last service? It may be time to send it in, Breitling recommends is to have the watch serviced every five years or so. Good Luck!
