What was the last matte dial Rolex model?
This is a general curiosity that crossed my mind. I did a search and didn't find a previous thread asking this question.
Since picking up a 1016, I've found the matte dial to be very attractive and I find that I prefer the matte dial on tool watches, especially vintage examples. From what I understand, the 1016 was produced through 1989, and it seems like it was the last matte dial production Rolex. Is that true or am I missing one? I know the 5513 was also in production up through 1989, but it went to an exclusively gloss dial in the early 80's right? |

Well, the 214270 and black dial 42mm Explorer 2 have matte dials... The 114270 more so however. The era isn't over yet

1983 was about it for for vintage matte dials to include the GMT 16750 and various Submariners. Interestingly, I also believe it was the end of an era for the acrylic crystals.

I think you posted in the wrong thread, although it is a nice dial, it is not a radial dial GMT.

If we're talking about "vintage" matte, I have an '87 acrylic Datejust with a matte blue dial, if that counts.

To the OP, if you had stated "last matte dial of a tool watch without white-gold surrounds", the 1016 would have been correct. I'm wearing mine today! (albeit an earlier non-hacking example)

Interesting. I always thought the nipple root beer (which is matte) was replaced by the glossy non-nipple dial right around then, but I didn't realize that the whole matte era kind of ended then.

Tudor subs seem to have used matte dials until the late 90s. Unless I misremember my 75190. Harry

That's true, the 79090 was made into the early '90s. But he was asking about Rolex...
