Buying naked Daytona's

I have a friend whom I was telling the story of the backlash I got about walking into an AD for fun and he had quite a laugh.

He's a pretty big collector himself and long story short said he's willing to sell me his 116500 with black dial at cost. It's pretty beaten up and the catch is it has no box or papers he has a white dial so doesn't mind giving it up. I do seem to like it over the SS white dial.

Thoughts?

If its from your friend and trust him. Just buy it and send it off for servicing sometime and, you'll get new warranty papers on your name!

For cost, I'd say purchase and send to RSC. Total cost would be about $13k after freshen up with a 2 yr warranty.

If the bracelet bothers you as it has been his daily, throw an extra $1500 or so for the bracelet and you got a new Daytona for under or close to $15k.

That was/is under the going rate for them when they first came out on the secondary market which from what I recall was about $17k.

Just get it. I can't imagine it being that banged up and if it is, just get it polished slightly and everything is good as new.

You can also buy a lot of other stuff for 12K. If you really want a Daytona then it might be a good deal

Don’t overthink it, if it’s genuine buy it yesterday. As others have said send it to RSC for an overhaul and they’ll make it new, or just wear it is as is and don’t worry about scratches and then send it in when you need the servicing anyway.

If you change your mind you’ll sell it within seconds down the line.

If you believe the watch is genuine, you like it and you are happy to pay the price, then as many others have said buy it, send it to Rolex for a service and then you have a watch with warranty.

I'd say, if you like the watch and trust your friend..it's a no brainer to pickup the Daytona at cost. It is a great watch.

The box and papers really aren't necessary if you plan to wear and at 5 yrs old is out of warranty anyhow. If the condition is a concern after purchase, just send to RSC for a service/polish. It will come back looking brand new with warranty.

BTW - Nice friend!

I wouldn't give a friend 12k for any beat-up watch if I were rich.

Cheers

Pick it up if you trust him. I’m also trying to figure out how he is a big time collector but has been dailying the same Daytona for the past five years? Does he just put his watches in the safe.

I'm not sure what some would consider big time collector he has 7 pieces in his collection from Patek to Rolex , it's a pretty pricey collection so I would consider him a collector.

As for the daily wear those would be his words not mine, he said that it would see wrist time most of the week.
