For a modem PP, what premium for papers?

Hello:

For a modern (in my case, a 5127), what kind of premium would one expect to pay for a watch with original papers?

I’ve found several for sale, some with and some without papers.

Condition being equal, how much more would you pay for a watch with papers?

Thank you for your thoughts!

LS

Hard to assign a value, and need to consider carefully your own collecting habits.

While original papers are unimportant to some, there are many Patek collectors who won't even consider a modern purchase without them. Without original papers you limit the pool of potential buyers should you decide to sell in the future. Even at a discount, many won't even look at it.

If you plan to keep the watch forever then papers really have no value other than emotional. Original papers can never be replaced. Does that bother you? If so, how much?

Some take it even a step further and insist on original papers without the original owners name stamped - something that's increasingly difficult to accomplish with ADs being admonished to fill in all paperwork at point of sale. How much extra value is it worth to have no one else's name on the certificate? This gets crazy if you let it, and Patek owners can be a highly selective group.

My advice? Wait for original papers. You may not care now but you'll thank me later.

To me, Patek papers are worth an additional US$1500-

The extract is very good but not the original certificate........

I would say US$1500- is very fair........

I Would never buy an in-production Rolex or PP without papers. Huge red flag for me .

Yep For me , I would not buy an expensive timepiece w/o original box and papers. I would accept archive certificate, but I would much prefer original certificate. You would find any piece without very difficult to sell. Imo it decreases value of piece much more than 1500 bucks. You might think you will never sell but you never know what the future holds. Too much money involved to settle for an incomplete set. As the 1st poster said, you will be glad later you didn’t buy one without . Just MO from much experience buying & selling. :-)

I would pay 1500 to 2000 (depending on cost of watch) for box and papers. Yes, they will have original purchaser's name but that will not matter because when you get it servciced it will be under your name.

I had a watch stolen, it’s not a nice feeling.
I won’t buy without papers.

If it's something you may trade in the future, some dealers won't even consider it without papers.
