Is this a kit or something you make from scratch?

I’d think I’d like to try to do one. Yours looks awesome.

The big card model SMS Baden?

It’s a kit, but that’s just a word haha. I wouldn’t recommend something this ambitious to a newcomer, I know what I’m doing and what you see is nearly 3 months of work. I’m not saying this to discourage by any means, or sound elitist, but they’re not cheap and I’d hate to see you spend money and not have a good idea what you’re getting into. This certainly isn’t a weekend project! Additionally, you’ll need a working knowledge of ship construction since the “instructions” only really show major sections or outline tricky bits. They’re assuming you know what each structure is and what it looks like.

I’d recommend starting small, if you’d like you can contact me offline and I’ll give you a list of suppliers and recommend something to start with.. It won’t be easy, but it’s certainly attainable if you want to build a ship from paper. This can give you an idea of what you’re in for and the hours you’ll have to dedicate.

It’s pretty reasonable to have a card model project last over a year or more. I know of a battleship Bismarck project that is around the 18 month mark and not finished yet.

I say all of this because I really don’t want to see you buy everything and then become disheartened at the massive time outlay.

However, if you’re talking about the resin and brass models, a lot of those are scratch built, mostly scratch built, or highly modified creations. The hulls are made from cast resin and the details are all brass and stainless steel with extensive scratch building. I could help you there too, but again, the outlay for materials alone will be big, not to mention airbrush, compressor, etc etc.

I’m glad to help though, just shoot me a message!

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it. I’ll have to really think it over now that I know how much harder they are from how great your results are. I may not have that kind of patience or skill level.

Patience is something you’ll need, but skill is learned, if you take your time, you’d do fine! I just don’t want you to think this is a weekend project, spend a bunch of money and then lose interest because it’s so daunting. However, if you do decide you want to give it a go, I’m certainly here to help!

Some progress on Baden. The medallion was given to Germans who donated their jewelry to the war effort in 1916. The text reads “In Iron Times”.

I had to upload some of the photos again. Someone was using my images for their art projects so I had to take them down elsewhere.

Some new stuff in here

Truly amazing! Do you have to give up some original details by going to 1/700? If so, what’s your thinking on what to keep on the models.

Awesome work, again. I couldn’t even make the stands for your models!

Typically nothing is left out as long as I have drawings or photos of the structure.

My goodness, came across this thread today and have enjoyed it immensely.

Your attention to detail is outstanding. I esp love the ones with ice broken around them, or water plumbing up for the sea as shells explode.

How did you do this, is it case resin?

Great work and such an enjoyable thread. Well done Sir.

Thanks!

This is my current project, the German Battleship SMS Baden, 1917. The model is made completely out of paper

Wow, thats fantastic.

I am busy reading your other threads and have to say your skills are awe-inspiring.

The details on your other builds, like the rust marks on the hull blow my mind.

I made models as a kid but could never get the painting correct or avoid fingers stuck to perspex canopies (Aircraft)

It all comes down to working slowly and knowing your subject. Good tools are the real key, especially an airbrush, or 3 in my case.

You are an incredibly talented artist. I love this thread, a joy to read.

I enjoy watching some of the model builders on youtube (plasmo is fantastic) but you are on a different league.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, Plasmo is great for teaching beginners. I like how his ships turn out. I wish he’d do some more advanced videos on weathering and weathering effects to help out newcomers.
