Aquanaut Focused Collection?
I’ve been through many stages of watch collecting and my current collection includes an Aquanaut, Nautilus, and Royal Oak Chronograph. I like the variety, but my Aquanaut gets the majority of wrist time. I was considering a long term plan of trying to obtain a 5164 and 5968 (even though they may not be obtainable). I’ve seen collections of predominantly Subs, GMTs, and Nautiluses/Nautili but don’t recall seeing Aquanauts as the focus of a collection. Has anyone else has done this or considered this?

Everyday. Aquanaut gets all of my wrist time almost. If the collection is small I don’t know that I would do it. If you want to put on something different than a 5167 you probably want something very different from it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Not a collection, but I never really liked the Nautilus (I had 5711) and now have a 5167 and 5167R. Very comfortable and great looking.

I think most people would love to have 5164 and 5968 but it isn't obtainable at the boutiques/ADs unless you're VIP or bundle with high price of complications categories.
For most people, it might be easier just get it from the secondary market if they're willing to pay more than double the msrp. For you, it should be easy to obtain, so go for what you love.

True. The difficulty of obtaining them probably influences collectability. Although there are some unbelievably Nautilus-heavy collections on TRF.

Seems brilliant to me. It would eliminate the constant need to scroll around and look for interesting new watches to buy. You could get a 5065, 5165, 5168, in addition to the 5164 and 5968. Different dials, different metal cases and there'd always be some out of reach grail. Eventually more of your Aquanauts would be discontinued and go from being difficult to impossible to get.
Why didn't I think of this? |

i have had a collection of Annual Calendars and a collection of Chronographs. but honstly was tying so much capital in not so complicated watches. i would consider a collection of PCCs in different colors (and maybe different ref). i like the 5204, 5270 from current collection and 3970 from vintage collection. i would also consider a nice collection of minute repeaters :)

These guys have fantastic collections and more than one Aquanaut. I guess part of what I was thinking was that does anyone have Aquanauts only or close to that? Because I’ve been wearing mine practically everyday for a couple of years and wonder if I’d be happy if instead of working towards a watchmaker Trinity that I try for an Aquanaut trinity. The fact that it would be almost impossible to do makes this question mainly theoretical but I was thinking about it and wanted to see what other TRFers thought.

I have some watches (5712a/5990a/15202a/116500ln) but I wear my 5164a most of the time. I just bought a 5167r and love it too. I think I will add a 5164r or 5968 later this year. You are so right, the aquanaut is such a nice watch to wear. It is by far my favorite everyday watch.

Me too. I wear my 5167R way more than my 5712 and 25960 right now. That could change but it’s just so easy to wear Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My kids have asked what is the one watch I would keep if I got rid of everything else - easily the 5164 (over 5711, 5712r, AC, and host of others). I didn't realize how much I actually love the aquanaut until I sold a 5167 and regretted it. Eventually replaced it with a 5164 and wear it more than anything else by far.

Just saw the owner of Leicester City Football Club, worth $5 Bill, was wearing a 5167. Nice change from all the usual Hublots and RMs.

The 5168 is a bigger watch and it has the blue dial and, personally, I like the weight of the gold. I have a 7" wrist and found I preferred the size of the 5167. Many Patek aficionados on this site prefer the 5164 to the 5167 but I don't travel enough to need the second time zone complication. The Aquanaut I finally chose is the 5167/1a, the bracelet version. Not many people like the bracelet but I think it's the best bracelet/clasp Patek makes.
