I lost my Patek 5968a

Hey there,

I wish I could be sharing a better story but I just found out that I’m missing one of my watches.

Lately because of the whole pandemic situation I haven’t been wearing my watches as much and I didn’t check my safe often.

Today I was packing because I’m traveling again and I couldn’t find my Patek 5968a, I’m guessing that I forgot it in the safe of the last hotel I was like 6 weeks ago... I called and they said nobody found anything.

I’m kind of lost right now and I would appreciate any help. What should I do? Is there any database that dealers check when they are buying a watch?

I’m in the US by the way

Thank you in advance

Do not want to make it worse, but was it insured?

Also, if you have the identification number of the watch and report to Patek that it was stolen, they can keep an eye out for it if it comes in service.

Ouch. So sorry to hear that. I would definitely be feeling a little lost. Just remember, in the end it’s just a thing. Everything can be replaced. I hope you locate it.

Here’s an article from NYT for you:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/16/s...egistries.html

I would first contact the local authorities where you stayed and lost the watch to have a police report filed. Then make sure the watch is reported lost/stolen online at both Patek and the Watch register. Important thing is to contact local authorities. Need to have a filed police report.

No major, reputable hotel will open a locked room safe without being in the presence of hotel management and or security ~ at least 2 people. If you truly left it in the safe, along with any other valuables, someone at the hotel knows where it is.

Unless he left it open.

in 2018 me and my wife checked into a hotel in Mykonos and found a Bvlgari diamond bracelet in the back of the safe. Of course we handed it to the hotel reception but whether the original owner got it back or not is unknown.

To the OP - please do check everywhere in the house. There is a real chance you could have just misplaced it there. So snoop around. I lost my IWC Gold YachtClub for over 5 months and found it by accident lying inside our family room sofa. My phone fell down the side of the sofa and as I put my hand in to search for it, I found the watch. Maybe you are more careful than I am but please continue to check.

I feel your pain. I had to buy my 5968A gray and I thought it was over priced then....I hope you get your back or a chance to own another in the future. Good luck.

You can report it as lost to Patek but not sure your local authorities will complete a police report for something lost in an unknown place somewhere else than hometown. Ditto for the city where the hotel was.

I would consider rummaging every part of the house in case you misplaced it there.

I agree that’s possible. In traveling between tracks I lost an important piece but did not realize it for a few months. I called the hotels, the airlines, etc.

Then - over 2 years later - I found it in a hidden zippered section of my luggage. Felt like an absolute idiot. But was massively relieved upon finding it.
My only post-discovery revelation was I had hidden it before going through an airport where TSA thefts had made headlines. Then in the turnaround at home for the next flight, forgot it completely.

This is why I think going through the house (like CSI would) is worth the time.

Thank you for all your comments. I’m moving back to Europe and it’s been a busy month for me.

There’s no way it is at my house, I checked everywhere.

Hopefully it will show up somewhere eventually...

Report it stolen to Patek. Fortunately that watch breaks quite often. Maybe it will get sent to HSWA and you’ll get lucky.

How does one forget about a valuable watch in a safe at an hotel? All the more reason not to travel with expensive watches. One maybe and never take it off.
I do hope it turns up for you very soon.
