Perfect “first baby” watch
Hello. I’ve been wanting to buy myself a “first baby” present due on Sept and have allotted $15,000 for a new piece. I’ve always wanted the explorer 214270 mark2 then got slapped in the face when Rolex decided to discontinue it, so I went along the lines of getting the Hulk but prices have gone up so bad it’s kinda ridiculous to be paying 20k for a sub. At that point, I’m better off getting a Pepsi GMTII which is a more complicated watch.
I went to my local Rolex AD and said I could pre order a DJ41 jubilee everose Wimbledon but I’m not in love with it. There’s something missing je ne se quoi. So I looked into other brands which caught my attention, namely: IWC portugieser, Vacheron overseas (the blue dial is stunning but the steel bracelet looks like an alien to me) forget about AP or PP can’t even get those if I wanted to. As you can tell from my selection sport watch is my go to as I barely wear a suit and tie anyway. Of course I could just go with the easy route of just getting the Explorer use the remaining funds as baby expense and call it a day. But where’s the horological fun in that. (completely irresponsible joke) Any recommendations or ideas would help! Thanks everyone Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For my first son I picked up an Omega Speedmaster Pro. First child-first watch on the moon.
Make sure you love it if you get it brother. Don’t let an AD talk you into a watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Whatever you decide on, get one with a serial number from this year. Then in the future, when the proper occasion arises, you'll have the perfect 'birth year' watch to make a gift of.

Maybe go grey for an Explorer? I'm sure there's still a couple "NIB" examples floating around.

This exactly happened to me... I wanted it to be the 214270 mkII. I was waiting for it since September 1st when the 39mm OP was discontinued (which I was also waiting for). Needless to say, it's been a frustrating experience with Rolex even trying to get some very basic pieces.
In the end, I decided to get the new Speedmaster Pro 3861, I was lucky enough to get the first Hesalite in my city when it first came out (according to the Omega Boutique). I got the call a week before our baby was born and the more I think about it, it's an appropriate "first baby" watch. I used the chronograph to time my wife's contractions and now I use it for things like warming up bottles and tummy time, etc. Not that I couldn't do any of that with any other watch, but operating the chronograph is fun. I still want an Explorer, but maybe I will go for the new 36mm version now. If it doesn't sing on the wrist, then I just going to get a DateJust and be done with Rolex. |

If you are spending $15,000 on a "baby gift" for yourself, my recommendation is to budget $30,000 for your wife/girlfriend's gift.
