Thanks for the input guys. Going to pull the trigger and buy a decent condition 16570 this month for £3500 or slightly under if I can. Appreciate the feedback! P.S anything I should look out for ? Lugholes or no lugholes? Serials I should look out for/ avoid? Thanks again.

My 16570 from 2010 (I believe) with the 3186 movement has a known issue where the mechanism fails to operate the hour hand. Mine developed this issue and cost me $500 to remedy. Rolex knows this issue and it is replaced with a more robust mechanism piece. While they were in there, they did a service, hence the cost. It’s a consideration. It was a bit of a hassle. I had a polar 5 digit, it was my first Rolex.
I bought it used for $3,650 about 7 years ago and sold it a year or so later for a small profit. Looking back I wish I still had it, what does $3.6k buy you now???

Seriously considering buying a 16570 polar (lugholes) with papers (2002) for £3800. The dealer wants £4000 but I think I can get him to knock off a few hundred. The watch is in great condition, not overly polished hardly any scratches. Is this a fair price in your opinion? Thanks.

Firstly the price sounds good. When I first espied the 16570 they were 2.5/3K max but that’s then. Nowadays really good models can hit 5K and NIBs.... Re the lume, if it’s 2002 it’ll be Luminova so shouldn’t be yellowing as per Tritium patina’d models, but I’ve always thought one of the traits of the Polar Explorers (I have a black faced 16570) was precisely that the lume plots are a different shade to the white face. I think that’s one of the many things that makes the Polars special in certain lights. So the fact the lume is ‘visible’ in the light is both normal and desirable. Maybe Polar owners can better chip in here. I have an almost daily battle not to get a Polar to accompany my Black face 16570.... top top reference with perfect proportions IMO. I love how nobody notices it. I only mentioned it to one engineer who has some vintage Omegas that I trust not to be goofy about it. I’m sure a few have seen it but if it were a sub, I know I would have gotten called out by some of the hourly at the plant. Culture can be a bit weird, can’t walk in with a coffee without a “one dog, one bone?” Comment from the peanut gallery.

Explorer II from 70s. Love the funky design from that era.

I went today and offered £3800 on the spot, got the cash out tried to hand it over he wouldn’t budge from £3950 lol. I can go back tomorrow he said he’d hold it for me but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. 2001 with lug holes, been polished once or twice but it still looks smooth. Papers aswell. Gonna have to sleep on it. Thanks for the input. |

My Polar is my go to watch for my work-related travels. For my vacation though I will pick up the Tudor Black Bay GMT. I although love the Tudor, being a new watch, honey-moon phase and all, I put the Exp II with joy every morning when I go to work. It is perfect watch. Sent from my MI 5 using Tapatalk |

Just for that very reason I'm addicted the Explorer II Polar dial to my collection next. I love the orange hand and will add an orange band once the purchase is complete. The issue is do I spend the $7200 for the CPP one or just pony up and add a few extra bucks to get new. That's if and when new comes along.

I am with you that the current version six digits is less attractive in my opinion, perhaps I need to take sometimes to appreciate them. That’s why I only focus on the older five digits and 1655. These are beautiful watches and I never get tired of them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks, The five digit explorer two sits better on the wrist, less prone to knocks and just an all round better tool watch than the newer version. I've got a black dial six digit one, but it's not as practical for expeditions... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Another experience with my Explorer II
I had too much speed (60mph) to too big waves and i jumped the first big wave and dived into upcoming wave with my jetski and got overboard as wave wiped me off. Propably quite normal to pro's, but in my case heart kept beating 2 hours after accident My driving glasses and headscarf are now in sea, but Explorer II wanted to stay :) It really makes a watch special when you have all kinds of experiences with it. Explorer II has been with me in many places.

To me it seems like the SS yachtmaster ii is the least desirable. I see way more threads about the explorer ii than I do the yachtmaster ii.
Give them explorer ii a ceramic bezel and it sells like hot cakes Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I love the SS bezel of the ExpII and dont think it needs a ceramic black dial at all. IMO thats taking away from its design heritage and is unnecessary. The ExpII was always supposed to be 'rugged' enough for hard surfaces during spelunking and ceramic doesnt take well to that style.

Explorer II is the ugly duckling. However I too love the Explorer II, but most people favor Submariner and GMT-Master II
