Yes. Prices at this auction were crazy. On SS Pateks they were insane.
But again...even in this crazy overpriced Phillips auction...a few pieces fell through the cracks. For example,
A. Lange & Söhne Langematik Anniversary, 302.025, at 52k CHF
A. Lange & Söhne Langematik Big Date, 308.027, at 18k CHF
Rolex Smurf, 40k CHF

To me it explains itself in the form that many people have that instinct drive that needs them to have it NOW! Immediately and exactly that, like impulse buying but on a grander scale.

I think most of us had moments sometimes where we just buy something expensive right that second without thinking about it, because we want it immediately and we want this thing. Maybe a wallet? Maybe sunglasses? But if you have 5 billion monies in the bank account it may very well be a watch.

Now does that explain all auctions? I dont think so... I do see somethings that are so readily available and have 0 differentiating factor / amount of speciality selling for ridiculous money for no reason.

My most recent memory of that was in mid-2020 a fully stickered brand new 116500 selling for about 40% over market rate BEFORE premium... Summer 2020 you could walk in any grey dealer and he would have 3 of those laying around... so 40% over market + 25% auction fee seemed to be quite ridiculous to me and I guess this one will never be explained.
