Butch / Sundance

Who are those guys?

What a great movie// Redford and Newman should’ve made 10 more films

The chase sequence is iconic with all the quotes.

How many of them are following us?
All of them
ALL OF THEM!? What’s wrong with those other guys?

Don’t they get tired don’t they get hungry? Why don’t they slow down? Hell, they could speed up at least it would be a change.

Sundance: They might surrender to us but I wouldn’t count on it.

Newman: You crazy, the fall will probably kill you.

All just fantastic.

Great flick. Includes one of the best character actors to ever grace the silver screen, Strother Martin.

Howdy,

Fantastic movie! I watched that with my 16-year-old daughter over the summer and she really enjoyed it a great deal. Obviously, she was a little sad at the ending but the movie played great even after 50 years for a child of today.

Take care,

Ruddiger

Katharine Ross married Sam Elliott almost 40 years ago. And they’re still married!

If the job of a movie's first scene is to quickly draw you in, making you want to see more, while at the same time giving you a meaningful glimpse of the main character(s), then this one gets an A+

One of my favorite opening scenes of all time.

Such a great movie, definitely worthy of multiple watchings. I really like Robert Redford, dude is such a classic guy. Loved him in Spy Game with Brad Pitt and most recently in Old Man W/ A Gun with Sissy Spacek who is also marvelous and still gorgeous at her age.

I think this was one of the most fun and smart historical movies ever made because it used the talent and charm of the actors in such a great way.

That had a lot to do with the screen writer William Goldman, one of the most successful writers and script doctors in Hollywood.

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001279/

According to Goldman, when he first wrote the script and sent it out for consideration, only one studio wanted to buy it—and that was with the proviso that the two lead characters did not flee to South America. When Goldman protested that that was what had happened, the studio head responded, "I don't give a shit. All I know is John Wayne don't run away."[10]

Goldman rewrote the script, "didn't change it more than a few pages, and subsequently found that every studio wanted it."[10]

The role of Sundance was offered to Jack Lemmon, whose production company, JML, had produced the film Cool Hand Luke (1967) starring Newman. Lemmon, however, turned down the role because he did not like riding horses and felt that he had already played too many aspects of the Sundance Kid's character before.[11] Other actors considered for the role of Sundance were Steve McQueen and Warren Beatty, who both turned it down, with Beatty claiming that the film was too similar to Bonnie and Clyde. According to Goldman, McQueen and Newman both read the scripts at the same time and agreed to do the film. McQueen eventually backed out of the film due to disagreements with Newman. The two actors would eventually team up in the 1974 disaster film The Towering Inferno. Jacqueline Bisset was a top contender for the role of Etta Place

Lemmon as Sundance? Wow. Hard to envision that working. So much better having a more subdued actor playing against Newman's effervescent Cassidy.

Yeah. It's always fun to read about hit movies and see who they were offered to before they were offered to the person that ended up starring in them.

Tons of these links floating around. https://collider.com/galleries/iconi...ferent-actors/
