I agree this is a good choice. It was also my first Patek. |

Best entry level that I would recommend is a 5196, the grand classique.

Any Gondolo fans? Is the Calatrava generally preferred because it’s round? Total newbie to PP here. I’d been to a Los Angeles vintage watch dealer and he liked the 1940s rectangular and square faced PP as a vintage entry point.

currently the trend is towards the 5711, but I believe it will die down ,and Patek love will revert back to Calatravas:
so 5196 for me

The Calatrava is a sublime line of simple elegant dress watches. A person wearing a Calatrava has taste by definition—pure and simple.

You should think about how and when you will wear the watch and go from there. These aren't really entry level watches. Dress? Calatrava or annual calendar or simple Nautilus. Sports? Aquanaut or Nautilus, I guess. A Rolex sub is more robust for sports though.
Patek makes great chronographs if you want to time events. And I suppose an annual calendar chrono or a perpetual chrono could be one-and-done. Expensive but over time they have tended to hold their value and then some. |
