New to GS

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a Seiko Grand as a daily wearer.

I literally know nothing about them.

I like the clean look of the Elegance cream dials.

I see some advertised as 'mechanical' - can someone please explain how they work for me?

Sorry if I'm being dumb (or dumber than normal.)

Thanks in advance.

OK... it appears the model I like is the SBGR261 - all have 'Automatic' on the dial - but some are advertised as 'mechanical'. It's confusing me.

Off to 'google'* it all.

*other search engines are available.

Seiko's own site says...

"This watch expresses the classic style of models with mechanical Caliber 9S67 movements, preserving the design in every way while excluding the power reserve indicator and packing a Caliber 9S65 movement, instead.
The watch has a 3-day power reserve and combines the latest in hairspring technology with an escapement developed through the MEMS technology to achieve high accuracy and stability when worn.
The design embodies a pure classical elegance with box-shaped sapphire crystal glass, Zaratsu polished lugs, a brown leather strap, and a blue steel 24-hour hand complementing a silver dial."

So, it's a 'winder' that lasts 3 days or so?

Its an automatic mechanical movement watch. So it has a rotor, it will self wind when you wear it, no need to wind it other than the first time if you continue wearing.

Beautiful watch and a nice option.

From knowing literally nothing about Grand Seiko, to copping a really good reference within 24 hours?

Very impressive!

Now, I'm a bit confused? You are the OP of this thread: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=747956, but ask what the difference between a "mechanical" and "automatic" watch are?? Sorry, just bit confused...

Apologies for the confusion - I was just checking that the GS 'automatics' were actually 'self-winding', rather than a 'quartz' watch.

When I asked the question, I wasn't up to speed on GS watches - I've spent two days learning - and bought two 'Anniversary' models.

Again, sorry if I confused anyone.

No apology needed, just saw your beautiful collection and thought you would know the difference between mechanical (hand wound), automatic, and quartz. Your pieces you have now are heavy hitters. Congrats on your purchases, look forward to seeing them.

The first watch you bought is quite special as it is not only automatic (mechanical, but powered by the movement of your wrist) but is also Hi-Beat. This means it beats at 36,000 beats per hour - far quicker than most mechanical watches on the market. You will notice this from the unusually smooth sweep of the second hand, and the sound of the movement when you put it to your ear. It’s like a gattling gun!

The second has a GMT hand which will let you set and read a second (home) time zone. The whirlpool pattern has the famous ‘Daini thunderbolt’ on it. The hallowed Daini factory was the “second” Seiko plant - the one that designed and built the mechanical hi-beat movements of the 1960s that were so precise that the Swiss had to abruptly cancel the observatory trials to stop Seiko sweeping the awards.

Congrats and enjoy your fabulous watches!

(4580-7010. Not my image, unfortunately. Note the Daini thunderbolt at 6 o'clock.)

Haha you’re a baller, buying two anniversary pieces so quickly. Both sweet pieces.

Would highly recommend a Spring Drive piece. Look into the technology, it’s incredible. This video does a really nice job explaining it https://youtu.be/jVoRoK1u3Dg
