Lucky,
First off welcome to TRF You haven't been here but a few days, so you really don't know the members here. I'm sure there's a bunch of people here that make upwards in the six figure range and even higher. We're not snobs or pricks. For the most part when someone tells you what they would do, it's just their opinion. The watch that you found could have great sentimental value to the person who lost it. Like Gedanken, I believe what goes around comes around. I'm not judging you at all, just giving you a different outlook on things. |

I suppose one point that's missing here, is that there may be some confusion between "watch enthusiasts" (OK, "watch-nuts" ) and being rich enough to truly afford what we like.
As said above, there may be some truly well off members of TRF, but most of us have to deny ourselves some other item(s) to purchase the object of our desires (hopefully not food and other essentials, although it has been known for some to even go that far - not present active members of TRF I hasten to add). On both the Isle of Wight and in Cornwall, $50k US (over £30k) would be considered a very good salaray indeed (on the Island it would definitely put you in the top few % of earnings), yet there is one Rolex AD and several Rolex's are seen amongst the "normally paid" locals. It's just a matter of priorities (some would say - their wives for example - slightly misplaced, but well thought about and "loved" none the less). |

LuckyBST,
I do not know where you live, but most states have a statute making the "finders kepers" rule a crime. In Kansas it is call Theft of Lost or Mislaid Property. The value of the item marks the severity of the crime. The watch would make it a felony. Kinda of like saying someone misplaced their car because they left it unlocked and the keys inside. You wouldn't steal the car would you? The Rolex has a serial number in it for a reason. To identify the owner! Again your location may be different, but where I live you have to make a reasonible attempt to locate the owner. Posting a note on the back side of your office door will not cut it. It would be best to notify the police department in the area where you found it, and request to have the item returned to you if the owner is not located. In KS it is 60 days. The other reason you might let the Police know is you dont know the circumstances behind why the watch ws laying there. It could be connected to a Robbery, Burglary, or even worse a Homicide! Now your walking around with a watch from a murdered subject on your wrist. The next time you take it in for service, you may become a suspect. You don't need that hassle. Even if it was merely lost, the owner would be very happy to have it back. Some of us appreciate fine watches, and save for years and years, and are by no means rich enough to go and buy another, or have a special insurance policy for it. I'm a police detective, and my wife is a school teacher, Our slaries combined don't even come close to six figures. My DJ was a 10 year anniversary present, it would kill me if I lost it and somone didn't do the right thing. Last edited by High-Gear; 16 April 2006 at 04:28 AM.. |

Where I'm from, we are to report & deliver the found property to the local authorities. If the property remains unclaimed after one year , the property will be returned to you.
There was a case about 2 years ago. A person found a gym bag with $1,000,000 in it. ( Seriously, this was on our local news for the whole year). It remained unclaimed, and was promptly returned to the finder. That is some serious coin to find and have the ethics to turn in.

So I guess the 'your' watch phrase in my post went unnoticed by all.
I'd have done my best to ensure it was returned to its rightful owner. |
