Hello all!

I am looking into adding a Luminor into my collection and would like one that is "the" Luminor reference so-to-speak. I do know that the 47mm looks a bit large to my taste, otherwise I would probably buy a PAM00372. However it seems the next best option in today's catalog is the PAM00914.

What would you consider the best "first" Panerai?

I'm open on budget. I feel like over $8k you should be getting the titanium cased variants (one day).

The ecru lume (which some call “fake patina” and others say is just a color) keeps the 914 from being the modern “classic” 44 PAM for me. For me, white or green lume is more “classic”. So, I’d say the 560/562/564 are the most “classic” 44’s in the current catalogue.

As for what is the “best” first Panerai, that’s much more complicated and really personal to each person. So many good ones.

So your question encapsulates the exact problem with Panerai these days... It doesn't exist. The 372 as you pointed out would be the most "classic" representation of a Panerai, but there really isn't a model that exists any longer 44mm. In the past, I'd tell you the 111 or 112 would be great examples. There are similar models available today, but none exactly like either. This is deliberate on the part of Panerai.

As I have stated many times; there are plenty of worthy Panerai models in production, but there is no cohesive core line up. The cheapest, entry level models all slack on one detail or another (sandwich dial, additional dial text, snap-on caseback, etc). What people really want is a 911 with a black dial. This would give you an in-house movement, sandwich dial, gold hands, screw down caseback, 44mm size, no unnecessary dial text.

Thank you all for your responses! I agree that it seems the core "essence" has been lost in the current catalog. The 914 does seem to grab most of what I want: screw down back, sandwich dial, 44mm. But I do wish it had the gold hands.

Has this been recent? I could have sworn when I looked not all that long ago there were more options in the base line.

I believe I saw somewhere here that there may be more releases this year. Perhaps I'll see what comes around (if anything).

There will be some releases next month - exactly what is unknown. There will be titanium brown dialed versions of the 914\915 at some point if that floats your boat.

I've seen your pic on another thread and see you have the 722, not 723. I've been asking advice for my first Pam and im pretty sold on this one on bracelet. Look for a mint PAM 111 It comes from the right Panerai vintage .

Modern available 422/372 .Prefer 422 due to crystal .Plexiglass on 372 very impractical .Sold my 372 but wear the 422 a lot.

127/217/249/232 VERY noteworthy mentions.

PAM 24 also ,especially with polished bezel and tritium dial .Model C
