Going to look at 5227J

If I was going to look at a new 5227J is their anything I should be aware of?

I have noticed that some shops have obviously let the watches be tried on and the straps are worn.

Is this normal?

Just wondering what to expect.

I am sure you have read up on the watch and have seen photos.

Are you going to an AD or pre-owned store?

Some watches at an AD will have had many people tried on the watch and yes the leather strap may show some sign of wear. If you really like the watch, this may be where you can negotiate a discount or ask for brand new straps. New strap should be only a few hundred quid, at least at dealer cost.

5227 is a nice modern Calatrava with a larger diameter and yet the officer's caseback is a cool added feature.

I understand the price versus the additional case back etc. I just really like the watch over the other possibilities.

Should I be bothered about the age of the watch? It’s new but I gather that they could be sitting in the shop for quite some time?

The dealer has just told me they don’t know the age of the watch.

Should I be nervous about this? It’s an AD

If you are buying from AD, there is nothing to worry about. The warranty starts from your purchase date not manufacture date.

The 5227 is a lovely watch.

Make sure you like the size. The 5227 is large for a non-complicated Patek dress watch and wears larger than one might expect.

I love the size. I tried it on about a year ago so am confident over the reference etc.

It’s just the purchase details I am trying to work out, servicing etc. So if I buy a watch that has been on a ADs shelf for 2 years do I have to get it serviced early?

If you buy a watch from an AD, you get a full 2 year warranty from the date of purchase. However if you know it's been sitting at the AD for a while, you can try negotiating on the price as the AD is probably eager to move the watch.

Yes. How can an AD not know the date of their own stock? Simply look it up in their records. More going on here than they are telling you. The strap appears worn?

I have looked at a few of these watches over the years. Many of them have been tried on in the shop. The AD I am talking to is saying they will give me a new strap as well as the one that comes with the watch.

That makes sense and seems relatively common when customer asks. I wouldn’t worry about how long it’s been in the case, but as others have said, if it’s been there a while I would ask for discount.

I own a 5227g/black dial and love it. The only Calatrava I like better is the 5107g on bracelet. The craze for stainless Pateks has gotten so out of control that these 5227s seem like a bargain. The craftsmanship in the hunter case back is outstanding. The larger size allows this watch to crossover to more casual wear.
A lot of gold Pateks sit around at ADs for years before being sold. Nothing bad happens to them and the warranty isn't activated until it is sold.
Enjoy your 5227, assuming you purchase it, it's a superb piece.

Check the price on Chrono24 to get the idea of the price for new/unworn and ask for discount.

Ask for a deployant buckle as well to sweeten the deal

Looks like you got it on deployant? How was that worked out? The standard is the prong buckle, and a Patek deployant is worth a pretty penny.
