5980 - bubble, trouble or a safe investment?

So. The watch of my dreams (5980/1A-001) are within reach at a price which at present time is at least -10% under the lowest offer on Chrono24. Unworn and full set from a small, local and independent dealer.

I'm buying to enjoy and wear first and foremost, and will probably only sell somewhere in the far off future (+10 years at least). That said, you can't neglect the fact that this is a serious investment.

Jump or wait - that's the question.

A watch to me does not fall into the category of a ‘serious investment’ - it is a hobby.

Buy the watch and enjoy it. It is my favorite stainless steel Nautilus reference.

A Patek Philippe is a solid watch to spend $ on. That’s as far as I can go to that regard.

I'm with you. I believe that this could be a future classic, as well as being my personal favorite as well.

There are more things to consider, including when and where to wear a timepiece like this...

JUMP! or pass along the dealer info!

Doesn't sound like you have to pay the NOS premium so wear it in good health and enjoy. I'm sure you can sell for a profit in the future.

BUY IT. I love the 5980/1A...wish I could find a good deal on a black dial black date wheel. But blue is good!!!

I can see the appeal of this as it stands quite apart from other Nautiluses, but its price at hitting £70K here is pretty scary.

My favorite PP, crazy to think it wasn't too long ago they were sub 50k. If memory serves correctly, I believe this was the first auto chrono that PP made, certainly first chrono for the Nautilus so their is some historical significance to support pricing

I was lucky enough to get mine back before these went crazy. I actually purchased mine at a discount from an AD. They were sitting in AD's cases unloved back then. Once PP stopped making this model, the price started to rise. I had an offer to purchase mine for 3x what I paid for it. That said, if you like this reference then by all means get it and wear it. As for future value, hard to tell. I would think it would at least hold its value.

Prices are high right now, and no one really can see what the future holds... That being said, however, history has shown that most steel patek watches are a pretty safe bet.

Good luck!

I had one and enjoyed it. But it is big.

The current prices are ridiculous frankly. Modern watches trading at multiples of MSRP I think spells bad news.

Agree. I had both the black and blue dial, preferred the black. Bought new in 2014 and 2015 from AD, paid $41K. The pushers aren’t exactly smooth feeling either. My black version had problems resetting the chrono after three months and had to go for repair. But it’s a cool looking watch.

Get it! Nautilus is only ever going up, especially a discontinued blue dial variant!

You’re right, it is a serious investment.

I wouldn’t do it though.

You can get a 5990 and 5711 at msrp from your AD for the price of the 5980.

I just can’t get myself to pay such an inflated price even if it was NOS.

The 5980 in steel is destined to be future classic - in all dial variants. Then blue dial looks the best but it seems there is also a lot of demand for the white dial given the short production run.

To me this is the best nautilus ref ever made and the dial layout beats the 5990 hands down. Whilst it doesn’t have the same dual time / GMT function as the 5990 the chrono movement is better and I find the general dial layout works much better.

Get it whilst they are still out there. I don’t see prices dropping anytime soon especially given the current demand for all things Nautilus.

Many thanks for all the valuable feedback guys. I really appreciated it. The price is about $70k btw. It's not sealed though, and has at least been out of the box once. Don't matter to me though.

My mind is still digesting...

If you want to make a good investment, investing in jewelry would be the best, to me investing in a watch is not a good idea.

I hate to say this but if you buy that 5980 I doubt you will want to sell it, even in 10 years.

Well, so far in my collecting, I've never sold a single piece. I'm buying to keep, but you never know what the future brings.
