Looks great for a 41 year old
Its got some character marks but those are great. This watch will still be a classic in 50 years from now.

For comparison, here is my similar vintage 1016, case back dated II 69, SN 2,168 XXX...I think both yours and mine might have later (ca. 80s) tritium service dials (not relumed), as the long and slender coronet is indicative of that. Frankly I've always found the dial on mine to be more attractive than the original late '60s dials I've seen; sometimes the numerals look too funky on those. Mine is also on a 7836 bracelet, but the end pieces are 280s. I've read both that 280 or 258 are correct for the 1016.

Your watch is beautiful, sir!
For comparison, I received my circa 1965 Explorer about 2 weeks ago and I believe it has the original dial. |

Hello Cefiro and Adam!!
beautiful watches friends! Thanks for sharing! The 1016 is a "pending asignature" in my collection. I like the oldtimer Explorers much more than the present made rendition, though I own a 114270 which gives me much pleasure as a dalily working watch. I will be looking for a nice 1016 soon. Thank you again folks! Best cordial regards, Abel.

Thank you Céfiro for your kind answer.
I got an eye on a 1016 here. This type is not so often found here in my Country. Will see what happens. Kind regards, Abel.

A true classic
You've made an excellent choice!
After years of waiting, my very first vintage purchase was a 1016 from 1965 and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. Along with the Sub (which was my second purchase), it's the absolute iconic Rolex. The elegance of the dial still blows me away. It looks as contemporary today as it did when Eisenhower was in the Oval Office. A timeless classic that will look great on my son's (or daughter's) wrist. But not anytime soon. |
