Victorian Burl Walnut Lap Desk / Writing Slope

Guys,

If you ever get a chance to add one of these to your collection of ephemera, do so!

What a lovely cornerstone to a collection of fountain pens, inkwells, papers, vellum indentures, and papers. This one dates back to the 1840's and is built to last another 150 years.

I found a couple in Britain that restores them (not refinishes... there is a huge difference), and this one comes with everything 100% original. The burl walnut shrinks over time so the brass bindings loosen a bit, but not too bad. These writing slopes tend to re-hydrate over time in a properly humidified home so the straps will "tighten" to the frame over a year or two of time. This one even has the scent of a fine antique which is caused by the tung oil in the wood.

These were used typically on ships, trains, and whenever the Victorian owners were traveling. A prelude to the laptop computer!

The leather top is a perfect pad for writing with a flexy dip pen. The two compartments on the ends are for inkwells. The center is for pens and the one on the right next to the long pen compartment is called a stamp slope.

The best lap desks have hidden drawers. Lovely!!! A nice place to store a gold double eagle or two! Or some jewelry!

And lots of storage! Papers, stationery, and so forth! All compact and neat!

That looks great. Where did you purchase it from, if you don't mind me asking?

I just found a set of Victorian inkwells and a pearl and gold dip pen to add to this set.

You will hardly ever find the inkwells with these slopes much less the dip pens, but if you search earnestly they are out there.

Great piece! It prompted me to start a thread (I didn't want to jump yours)about a writing desk that I have that's been sitting around for years collecting dust. Your post created a new interest in it for me! Thank you!

Thanks to you all!

Again, I have to say there are few additions to my collection that are as satisfying as this acquisition.

Wish I had a giant bookcase to add about 20 more.

But can you work on a laptop comfortably without a lap desk? I doubt it. Thanks to a lap desk, you can use your laptop with utmost comfort. Also, all those spondylitis symptoms you’ve been going through lately can be gotten rid of with the help of a lap desk. It is so comfortable that you don’t feel like using your laptop without one.

I have had this and these almost two years and they are most satisfying!

Just an incredible addition.

You can lay them on your lap, remove your writing instruments, stationary, and pen away! Just as they did 140 years ago.

These lap desks envelope your writing experiences on every side. Bringing you back to the Victorian era. Causing you to love what writing should be.
