With all this crazyness, I now just hope my AD will be back in business in the next 6-7 weeks.

My wife should deliver a boy by then and I’ve been planinng (some might even say it was part of the deal) from Day One the idea to get a watch on that exact day, have his name on the card along with his birth day, keep it full box and in perfect shape so that he scores big when he receives it and decides to sell because he just doesn’t give a sht on watches.

Only God knows I’ve been praying for a boy, hoping to be endearing my AD and get a bit higher on that Hulk list.

If I were your son, it would be more meaningful to me to receive a watch that you had worn through all our experiences together. The watch sitting in a closet for 20 years seems hollow. If you must buy it in your son's name, then do that, wear it for 20 years so he has the memories of you wearing it. Then send it off to the spa for a full service and give to him looking brand new. THAT would be meaningful.
Post of the month! One of my cherished watches, an old Cyma, was the watch I remember my father *wearing* every day. A gorgeous new Hulk would be amazing, but really has little sentimental attraction. IMO.

OP, your heart is in the right place, but as others have said, you definitely have more to consider than worrying about a watch. Congratulations on your good fortune, I hope all goes well.

I bought an Omega around the time my son was born. He is now a teenager and I can do a search of google photos and dozens of pics out camping, fishing, boating together with that watch on my wrist. He may not be interested in watches, but when he receives the old Omega beater, he will associate it with good times with Dad. That, and he will keep it as a memento because it won't be worth selling with the scratch from when I scraped a rock getting his fish on the bank.

I agree with frankthetank. It was an intense whirlwind experience. In my case, my wife went into labor at 8pm and that is after being in the hospital since 6am the that morning. Our first son was finally born the next day at 5am. I bought an IWC le petit prince to commemorate the birth of our son which I already purchased 2 months prior. With all the commotion, I didn’t give present it until maybe a week later when everything has settled down and we finally have our privacy. A watch is definitely a timeless gift OP. Congrats to you!

I’m worried about a lot of things, same as everyone, but talk watches to fill the dangerous empty space created by this recent madness.

This exactly! My wife and I are expecting our first in August, so hopefully around that time I'll get the call from the AD. It will be a watch I wear while raising my child, then pass it down when it's time. I hope she likes green. :)

As fate would have it, just 4 days after my previous post our girl was born 4 months prematurely on April 9. Fast forward to November 9 she is now 7 months old and healthy, what a ride!

AD came through in June, commemorative piece acquired.

No kids over here, but this sounds very believable and as good advise.

The good vibes and whishes of kind folks here worked out perfectly. Regarding the watch, it prooved unimportant, just as many said here. Still, it was nice to get that EXPL II on the exact day our son was borned, wearing his name and birth date on the card - basically his first document

Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Totally agree with you. My Dad's watches that he wore daily have far more meaning to me

So I could only say goodbye, hold and kiss my wife at hospital’ gate before her admission, waiting by the phone and hoping for a FaceTime call that would announce the arrival of our son and safety of my wife. Due to complications, I could only see them one week later, at discharge. Now all that is behind, the mom and the boy are both doing great. But this watch, same as this thread on TRF, is here and always will be a constant reminder of those moments and to cherish my loved ones.

So don’t judge too quick too hard for wrong priorities as in my case, the watch hunt was pretty usefull on tough times, taking my mind off while not being able to do anything about it.

Stay safe everyone and enjoy your family!

Making an investment in a child's name the day they are born is a great idea but I wonder about what watch to buy? Need to be fortunate enough to choose the right watch.
