Icon4 rare vintage Submariner. Value ?

Hi,

An old guy in my neighbourhood is owner of this vintage Submariner.
I want to make him an offer to buy it.
Even though the ouside condition is not good. But it works.

Do you know which model and year it is and the value of the watch ?

Unfortunately I can't insert links in the thread. Please send me a PM or try this coded Url:

www DOT bilder-upload DOT eu SLASH upload SLASH 7a38ff-1594120161 DOT jpg

Thanks

Br

James

P.S. Would one of you please insert the working link in his reply. Thanks !!

Looks like a 5513 from mid seventies. I'm not an expert of this particular reference but I don't think it's a rare watch.

Pics are horrible but from what I can see the dial and hands should be original and so the plexy and the insert.

We dont give evaluations but with the information above you can look at sold listings on eBay and Chrono24 to see what they have sold for.

Ref 5513 with non-serif dial, I guess. Without photos of the serial number and inside case-back, we can't really tell you if everything is original. The insert is definitely not original, so subtract about $2k USD. Well-worn watch, but the dial and hand-set are appealing and the lugs, while polished, are still thick. Crown-guards maybe a bit thin, but hard to be sure from the photos. I would probably buy it at the right price, but that's really going to be up to you, since I don't know what other options you have and what your relationship is with your neighbor. I suggest doing some price research looking at SOLD eBay items and forum listings. Don't look at asking prices from dealers and Chrono24.

Because it stands to reason that a relative newcomer to the subject, probably hasn't taken thousands of photos of watches. Just a guess

What do you mean with: <The insert is definitely not original, so subtract about $2k USD>. Only because the bezel is not original the watch has 2K less value ???

I googled a bid and check sold items on Ebay. If I am right the prices for 5513 with non serif dials for good ones are about 10,000 Euros. Right ?

The math being, that a correct insert could/will set you back 2k. So, yes, subtract 2K from the value of an all-correct version of that watch in similar condition.

When I created my account in 2017 I gave me a pseudonym by hazard. So, this does not mean that I am an expert in vintage 5513. I prefer that "experts" give me their opinions about this watch.

CAN cost 2K.
Can also cost $200 or $15,000!
Depends on many factors for many watches.

I'm giving you an approximate number, obviously, but that's correct.

other question: What does a Rolex dealer ask for external refurbishing of a watch in this condition? Would you ask a general watchmaker to refurbish it? (cheaper?)

Impossible to say, since one doesn't know what replacements Rolex will require before they evaluate the watch. Rolex doesn't do piecemeal repair/restoration, it's pretty much all or nothing, although sometimes they will give you some options. There are many threads on the forum dealing with this question (including this recent thread: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=750533), and I suggest you read some of them to get an idea of the process.

Many independent watchmakers can certainly service the movement. Proper restoration/refinishing of the case is a speciality skill that can be done by a few different people. Again, this question has been thoroughly addressed in other threads, so you can learn a lot by searching the forum.

The link does explain the issue very well.

Fazit: For vintage Rolex -> Independent watchmaker probably better than Rolex Service Center

The picture could have been taken by a jittery person or with a low spec picture taking device, or both. It's one of those mystifying moments in life like when somebody captures a picture of Bigfoot.

Some more photos.

https://www.bilder-upload.eu/upload/...1594211962.jpg

Could again someone of you post the photos directly in the thread. I can't do it as newbie. Need 10 threads first.

Info: Watch seems to be very worn and ugly. Thats not true. No deep scratches on glas and metal. What you see is skin scoring, dust and other human crud. Can be rubbed of with a tissue

Is it normal that this model has no code/number graved in the case behind the bracelet end ?

What happened?
The owner of this website (www.bilder-upload.eu) does not allow hotlinking to that resource (/upload/2a991b-1594211962.jpg).

Try to use the forum to upload pictures or imgur.com for example.

Yes, it looks like the OP has more than 10 posts now, so it's reasonable for him to upload photos himself. I definitely recommend an image hosting site, since it will permit him to post larger photos. The direct upload feature is really barely more than thumbnails.
