If you’re not known to the AD then full deposit is understandable, if you are known to the AD then I’d expect either no deposit or max 5K.

I had no prior relationship or AP purchases and was asked to pay a 25% refundable deposit on my 15500.

As long as it’s fully refundable I’d say yes.

I’d go to an AP boutique, i paid 25% refundable deposit with a 4 month (received in only 6 weeks) delivery time frame for my 15500 from the bal harbour boutique.

Eh better trust the AD because if they go under then you are out 20k. AP themselves take 25% but much safer leaving them my money than an AD.

Full deposit for a 15500ST?
No delivery date set?
I would not go there.
Maybe the AD will get one or two 15500ST pieces this year. And who will say he will deliver to you first?

This, and if you trust the AD.

You obviously haven’t learnt any sense, that’s for sure!
Why would you even entertain the notion of giving all your money to an entity you have absolutely no guarantee are still going to be in business in 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months time?

Tell them if they seriously want your custom, they’ll phone you the minute it arrives and checked it over – you’ll be there within the hour to pay for it and have it sized.
Remind them that banks are in the business of providing funds to improve cashflow, not you!

You're absolutely correct, and thanks to everyone for their input. It is one of those things that you need clarity on. I know now what needs to be done.
Thanks again.

I paid in full for a blue dial 15500 but with a definite date/guarantee that I will have the first one in the country. I received it within 2 months. Next watch I ordered, I didn't even have to pay the deposit since it arrives in November, that was 6 months from my order date.

No way without a definite delivery date. That deposit is worth hundreds of dollars in interest depending on the time frame.

I don't know that I would do it, unless they guarantee delivery in writing on a specific date, with the right to a full refund for any reason. AP boutique only asks for 25%, with a guaranteed delivery within the year. How big is this AD? Insisting on a full deposit might indicate liquidity issues with the shop...

So guaranteed delivery within six months. If you trust them, why not? Sure, it is a little unusual but, again, you are the only one with enough information to make the call. As others have said, there are alternatives but they may not be open, or an inconvenience, to you.
