Probably depends a bit on your existing collection. I would say the RO bracelet is a thing of beauty and a tiebreaker if in doubt.

I had the same predicament, a little over two years ago.
I ended up going Royal Oak 15400, more classic, bracelet is stunning, easier to wear. The perfect 1st AP.
Then fast forward to this year, started looking for an elephant but ended up going for a ghost. The ceramic and rubber did it for me.
But I would definitely go 15400 first over and an OS, and then add the OS later down the line!

+1 for having the bracelet in your first AP. There's nothing else like it in the industry.

Tough as the bracelet is great on the RO, but the ROO is a seminal sports line. If you are planning on a Patek or Lange etc, then I'd get the ROO.

15400 would be my choice for sure. I would entertain the 15500 if you have to pay a premium on the 15400.

For 42mm offshore I would rather have the diver and save a lot of coin. 44 or RO for me.

15400 was my choice and I really liked the Elephant.

The bracelet and dial are way better.

Also, AP will sell you a variety of rubber and alligator straps to fit the 15400

I bought elephant as my first AP back in 2015. Was also looking at RO chrono and RO at that time. ROO was simply much more and I didnt yet appreciate relative simplicity of RO. Added also steel bracelet for elephant (cca 2k eur). Later I have sold elephant and now i have jumbo and ceramic 44mm which I believe is perfect AP couple.

So if I could go back in time I would probably go immediately with 15400, bracelet is state of the art and is perfect one watch to have from AP. If you plan to expand your collection elephant is great piece to start with and definitely more eye catching and sporty...

15400 black is a marvellously elegant watch - it dresses up and down very well
