I thought this was insane.

This lot sold today at one of my favorite clock auctions. Plus a 20% buyer's premium!

I find that very difficult to believe. Am I missing something here?

Money laundering is a thing I’ve seen mentioned regarding insane prices on relatively normal goods at auctions..

Everything concerning vintage Rolex sport models is insane, particularly if it concerns GMTs, Submariners, Sea Dwellers and Daytonas. Don't try to make sense of it.

At least two people still believing in the value of blueberries. Nothing less and nothing more.

Personally, I don't drink the Kool-aid, but I don't know why this is surprising when one looks at the premium for a blueberry 1675. $10k-$15k seems about right and I don't think the buyer will have any trouble getting his money back once it's installed on a watch. Could be a way to get the Pepsi for free.

More likely a way to sell a radial worth 20 for 40. It probably works.

Kind of risky to pay 12k for a <1k insert.

I wouldn't do it, and I think that it would definitely be a risky buy-and-hold investment, since I am sensing a long-term trend towards greater skepticism. But for now, the blueberries are still selling. So as you said, at this moment, I think someone could install the blue bezel and flip it for a profit. Of course, that may not be the buyer's plan.

I assume someone felt that it was an original "Blueberry'' insert.
Which many people question the authenticity of all of them.
