Seek feedback on my new acquisition: Rolex 1675 mk 5 1978

Dear all,

I would like to ask for your opinion on this gmt watch which I just purchased a few months ago on the overall condition. Just want to understand more about the watch as I am looking to keep it and pass on to my son eventually. Thanks everyone!

Although the insert is blueback which is period correct for 1675 in yr 1978, I would prefer a faded insert for that vintage vibe. I managed to source a good redback insert faded to my favorite copper tone.

Appreciate all of your inputs. Thanks.

Regards
Aston

I would not agree that a blueback is period correct for 1978. I believe they only came later, in the earlier 80s/16750 era.

Dear HarryLime,

Thanks for your opinion on the blueback.

How about the watch itself? Anything to share?

Thanks.

Looks great in your wrist, but probably better on mine.

Love that vintage insert.

Enjoy and wear in good health.

It's beautiful and the vintage insert is much nicer than the newer one. Enjoy.

Beautiful and yes, I had no idea Rolex was using blue back inserts in ‘78

Dial looks very clean for its age and has lighter patina compared to the hands. is this original dial?

Dear Jerry. Thanks for the comment. The dial is true mk5 and comes with puffy lume which is in line with 5.5 million series. There is no reason to doubt it's not the original dial unless otherwise.

As for different degree of patina between the dial and the hands, it's a known fact that they can age differently as the components are supplied by different companies using different type of lume. You may read up more online. Hence the slight difference in patina is perfectly reasonable. There are many examples online for reference.

Do you have any other feedback to share?

I like this watch a lot, you did good on this one.

How many times does it have to be said, Dial’s and hands don’t age the same often. patina perfect matched hands are probably often sourced or relumed.

It’s also pretty easy to tell a relume with macro pics, the surface of the tritium is pretty hard to duplicate perfectly under 10x magnification.

Dear Chris,

Thanks for your feedback. It's true that under a powerful loupe, the texture of the lume can tell if it's a relume.

Based on the feedback so far, I am glad I found a honest watch and the insert seems to be favored by many of you here.

Thanks to this wonderful community!

That looks absolute perfection as far as patina goes! Congrats.

It kind of makes me sad we won’t be getting this type of thing in the future from the current models.

That's exactly the beauty and allure of old world watches right? People can keep posting about their Batmans and Hulks but ultimately it looks the same.

For vintage watch, each carries it's own unique DNA, rendering it special to the owner.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I always think it's funny when people post their incoming when they all look the same, as on the website.
