Rolex case back brush grain orientation

Hello everyone I have a question with regards to the case back and the direction of the grain of the brush effect. Is this random or is there any specific orientation to the grain with regards to the writing on the inside??

It is random.

FYI: When refinishing the case back one has to go with the existing grain to get a good finish, otherwise you'll have to brush way too long to get the desired result.

With a lapping disk you can really get a close to factory finish if the case back isn't completely trashed before the service.
And in the worst case one has to buy a new back, they're only like a hundred bucks or something.

Interesting, I did not know one could buy a caseback. Do those casebacks carry any indication that they are a "service" part?

I don’t think you can just buy one it’s more likely you have to buy it and do a one for one swap.

I like to orientate the grain to run between the lugs. I polish the case back. Fit it to the case, tighten it fully with the new seals. Mark the direction with marker pen on the polished parts.

Then remove the case back and apply the grain in the marked direction. Remove the marker pen with acetone.

When you refit the case back the grain will run between the lugs.

RSC NY just replaced the caseback on my YG DD. The caseback is also YG. They kept the old caseback, which reduced the cost I paid for the new caseback. Still...I paid a net cost of $1,338 for the new caseback.

Submariner caseback sanding brushed finish

Removed the strap off.
Taped the lugs
Put a piece of tape on the crystal for orientation of the draw
Put permanent marker on the case back for reference
Taped down a piece of 600 grit paper on a marble kitchen counter
Used a straight edge on the kitchen counter to draw the watch along some 600 grit in the direction of the tape on the crystal in one direction checking the wear of the permanent marker to ensure an even draw rotating the watch if required.

No disrespect, but i see absoltely no point or benefit to doing this.

This is like the people that go on about the coronet on the winding crown having to sit upright when the crown is fully wound in.

Makes no sense to me ...sorry
