is the aquanaut 40mm worth the money or is it better to stretch for a nautilus??? i'm looking at some pre-owned models around $9 - $15k and currently own several late model rolex sport, omega sport and pam's...

i'm ok with a quartz aquanaut too.

any advice or comments are appreciated as i'm new to the pp scene and just looking for entry to the brand.

would you trade a DSSD MK1 dial + $15k for a base nautilus 40mm? that's a deal i'm looking at... i'll still have a decent collection but more varied... which is what i want. for some reason i think its a bit rich when looking at the dssd and cash i'd have to trade.

OR, $12K for a jumbo aquanaut quartz on rubber and keep my dssd.

i still have to authenticate the aquanaut but the nautilus is kosher.

thoughts?

JC, I'm a big fan of the DSSD. However, I love the Nautilus and find it much more practical from a design and fashion standpoint. The Sea Dweller is a heavy duty tool watch that wears much differently. I take it you've tried on the Nautilus as its substantially thinner than the Deep Sea. The Nautilus fits under a shirt collar much easier and in general is more comfortable to wear. Assuming you know all these things already, would I make the trade? It depends. Since I feel I need at least one Rolex tool watch in my collection I'd do the trade only if I had another Submariner to fill the gap. If the DSSD was my one and only, I'd only trade if the Nautilus really sang to me and made me not want to look at another Sea Dweller! Regarding the price. It's sounds a bit on the high side but still reasonable providing the Nautilus is in pristine condition.

Aquanaut wise, I'd skip the quartz in favor of a 5167A. That's just me though.

Thanks! I'm going to see what a cash only price might be for a used A-naut 5167A... if its around $15k, i may be able to keep the dssd. or, i'll go big and get the nautilus.

on a side note, the AP RO is also quite similar to the Nautilus as it also looks like a Genta design from the 70's... imo

I don't think the 5167 is worth the price it's going for recently. The 5065 and 5165 are more reasonably-priced at only 2mm smaller.

Are you saying you're finding the 5167 (the 40mm Aquanaut) for $9-15k!? Link me! I'd be all over one.

Sounds like you have doubts, wait until you have no doubts, then this will be the watch for you.

I think the Nautilus is the better watch but the Aquanaut is the price range for now. But, I just found a home for my PAM 196 to a good trf'r so... The hunt continues... and I might spring for the Nautilus after all.

both nice but the Aquanaut fits like a dream and has more of a modern and broad appeal.

ps i wouldn't even consider a quartz patek.

Just get the 5167 on the rubber strap....that is all you need.

Do not get quartz.

Do not get rid of your DSSD unless there is something wrong with it.

If I had to i'd shift the dssd and get the patek I like the most
After patek you will find the dssd cluttered and nowhere near as nice
guess there's no such thing as a starter patek but the 5167 and 5711 aren't too hard on the wallet

the bulk of the price you pay, is for the movement in any fine watch... the rest is just jewelry imho.

similarly, precious metals generally take a heavy hit after purchase, partly because the movement is where the value is and the case material affects its preowned price far less.

its good you posted so you didn't make a purchase you may have come to regret

i think the 5167 on dino leather is the way to go for now... no quartz...

the only thing wrong with my dssd is that it makes my 14060M and the lot have a complex.

5167a. Not easy finding a good one for $15K but you might get lucky. If you buy used, watch out for bezel wear, they have to go back to PP to be refinished, it is not something your average service person can help you with.

Definitely no quartz movement pp. You won't regret with 5711 or 5167. If possible consider theses two .

The Aquanat is amazing. Like previous people have pointed "its all you need for now". I would try to get it in a steel strap, but that just me. The Naut although a great watch, you can always satisfy your need with a RO. Unless you wanted the 5712, but thats a different animal and in my humble opinion is the Naut to get. Ohm and please stay away from quartz. Big NO NO.

You cannot go wrong with any of the automatic Aquanaut or Nautilus models, past or present. I'm biased towards the Aquanaut, but that's because I have a 5065 (still my favorite

). I preferred the lines and also felt that the watch was more durable than the 3800, which had a multiple part case, pressure-fitted case back, delicate clasp and no screw-locked crown.

Skip the quartz, though, for all of the reasons mentioned, plus one more: size. If you're looking at 38mm+ watches, you won't be happy with its 35mm diameter. Neither "jumbo" ever came as a quartz to my knowledge, and the last reference for a men's quartz was the 5064, at about 35mm. If the one being offered to you is being represented as a larger watch the seller is either mistaken/lying or the watch is of dubious origins...
