To sell or not to sell 5205g

Hey guys. Appreciate some impartial advice.

I have a 5205g purchased in 2020 worn a few times and paid full retail for it.

I need to free up some funds and I have an offer to put the watch against something else I want to purchase for market price or maybe a few % under which is fine in principle.

I’m just not 100% sure of letting it go. I did plan to keep it for the next generation etc and in the back of my mind I want to believe the price will increase over time at least to get my original investment back.

Does anyone have any idea on this model what the future may hold or is there anything previously that would help my decision. Understand no one has a crystal ball just want to make an informed decision before letting something go cheap and it can flourish over time.

If you think you can meet up with things without having to sell it off to free up some funds then don't sell. Hard to say what the future holds but i can guarantee you its not getting any cheaper.

It’s a down payment for something just hugely helps to use this and some cash rather than more cash :/ but now it’s at crunch time I’m thinking hmmm

Tough choice. Sure it’s a desirable watch but they made way too many of these, so the question becomes not if you want a haircut but how close and when? Personally I’d run to move it.

Sell it. I own it and love it but it’s not a classic or ageless design for generational passing down **relative** compared to some others. 1.) The month aperture annoys some people by not being flush with the marker, 2.) the new patek WG is too gray, the old white gold is brighter and nicer, 3.) the case shape is a little bulbous (and the hollowed out lugs are contemporary), and almost 50mm lug to lug is big for many wrists. Again I own it and love it but it’s not a “one watch” timepiece in my view so if there’s another you lust after as better then get that

Seems like you don't enjoy this watch despite you only got it last year and it is not about keeping vs selling but just about selling now or later. Truth is you should probably not have made the purchase. I'd cut my losses rather than speculating on a meaningful improvement in secondary market prices. Even well-loved classics such as the 3940 have been moving up slowly at best and the 5205 is far from being a classic at this point.

If you need funds I’d sell that for best offer you can get or trade for something you can move more easily when you need the cash such as a 5167 and you’d likely need to add a bit.

If you need the cash, sure it makes sense to do so... at the end of the day, its a watch. There are other things more important in life.

However, if it's for another watch... it depends on the watch. Value-wise the 5205 G/R are vey good bang for your buck (in this price range) considering what the complications you are getting. Design wise, sure... it's not for "purest", but over time, this one is going to age with grace. Call me biased, but imo it has everything you need from a classic Patek with a modern twist to fit today's desires. No other dress-piece other than the limited editions speaks to these elements or value.

I’d move it in. You lose the money on it the day you buy it, not the day you sell it, so that money has gone.

And by keeping it in the hope you will make some money back on it in the future, you’re missing out on the opportunity to put the cash into a much better bet.

It’s a nice watch, and as a new proposition at retail it is similar to the competition so i understand why people buy it. But in the used market, i think there are better options for the same price, with other watch makers watches reducing much more that Patek on the used market. In my view this means that whilst there is clearly a market for these used, it’s unlikely to be a growing market.

5205 is a beautiful watch (I had it too). But 5205 is a watch that is highly unlikely that's gonna go up in price. No matter when you sell it, most likely you are gonna lose on it, easily 10k if you sell it to a grey dealer.
So if you have the time, I would sell it on my own so I can maximize the sale price.
Now if you don't have that luxury, you are probably better off selling it now because as time pass by you might end up losing more.

Keeping it is always a good choice, if you truly love the watch

At the end of the day, it's just a watch. Depends on what you are putting the funds towards. If a towards a true type of investment that has a real chance of appreciating or throwing off cash, no doubt move it.

very interesting point of view. and i agree with you about it not being a classic or ageless design.
just curious to know what some classic and ageless less design PP have produced in the complicate/grand complicated segment?

5970 is one ageless design in a Lemania movement.

To the OP: Sell it and don’t look back.

I bought my 5205g some 10 years ago, chose it vs the 5726a in leather strap. And that is after reading various opinion on the pluses and minuses of both models.

In the end, I sold it two years later at a loss and bought a 5140g. Some 5 years later, also sold the 5140g and never looked back.

I guess the 5726a would have been the right choice and would probably be still with me at this time. In this environment, only Nautilus wins.
