PN dial

I couldn't be happier for you. I know I wouldn't have slept until the watch was successfully returned.

Great news, Pav. Nice to hear a watch dealer that stands behind their sale.

Fantastic news! I am glad the dealer did what was right! Sorry I got a little steamed in my last post, but it is upsetting to know that someone who is less informed is going to end up with this piece. What is worse, is now the dealer knows what he has.

Thanks Dan.... it's all about buying the seller first and then the watch. I did not ask the seller for reference directly but asked some collectors who dealt with him about their experiences. Overall, good responses. If I bought it off eBay from some unknown seller abroad I would be screwed.

No worries Scott. This is the way I look at it.... I am into vintage collecting watches for their beauty, mechanical engineering, and history. Some people only admire a watch for its outward appearance and could care less if its real Rolex or not. This beautiful piece is for them. Like Steve M said... it's a rare piece of art. And remember, to date nothing is proven either way (though I am 100% convinced it is not Rolex).

It is a very good looking dial. As it has been said by someone else I am sure it will end up in someone's collection.

Great news! Personally I would not buy one.

If they were OK why has not ONE person been able to verify a Texas dial stating or proving he bought it new that way? Does not make sense to me.

There are way too many questions on that dial IMHO.

Sure the watch will sell and possibly for a lot of money. But I have noticed many big collectors now stay away from these dialed watches.

I just would not want a watch I have to explain.

Good hunting for the next one and good luck. Maverick

Pav,

Very happy you were able to get satisfaction in your deal. The shame of it is someone else might find themselves in the same position you were in. I can't wait to see what you get to make up for this transaction.

I think the future for these dials is not good. But there are still big time collectors who buy and sell these. One recently sold for >70K! in September.

I too do not want a mult-10k watch that I need to explain. A watch should speak for itself.

Thanks for your input Maverick. This was a learning experience for me.

Pav: I'm curious, if you can tell us without violating any 'deals' you might have made, what did the dealer tell you about that dial? did he maintain it is a rolex dial or not?
did he say why he did not disclose to you? I am not asking for his/its name, address, etc.
just very interested in his/her response to your request to return and obtain a refund.

Your next watch should be a vintage Patek Phillipe, btw.

Dan,

I called the seller this weekend when it became clear it was a 'Texas' dial to make an appointment to come today. When I arrived today he was very pleasant and I asked to speak in private (in case a problem arose.... ).

I explained to him that I was not there to authenticate the dial or to really even discuss whether it was authentic or not. I told him that I posted this watch on VRF for the vintage Rolex experts to evaluate and the unanimous voice was . And now I wanted a 'no questions asked' refund. His response was ok to the refund and that he will have his watchmaker take the dial off to be examined closely. What he does with it now is up to him. I am out of the picture.

Now what to get next .... vintage PP .... come on Dan this is a Rolex forum for G-d's sake.

First point is that it just looked too new. Come on a 40 year old watch in NOS condition. Buying these watches takes a LOT of research and discussions with collectors.

Second point as discussed on VRF the dial has issues and quite a few which make it wrong.

The John Mayer Dial is a completely different discussion and had no bearing on the the Rolex Cosmograph pump pusher dials.

Forth point yes the Paul Newman dials were shown in Rolex Brochures but only the 6239 and 6241.

Here my is my 43 year 6241 with all its imperfections.

The only relevant point actually is that you love this watch and you bought it for the right reason (these are not investments or to show off).

So Pav, How much did you spend on...............

Seriously though, I think that I would be happy for the rest of my life if I had your 6263 Daytona. You have a terrific collection. Good luck on finding your next grail.

Pav,

On the 6263 I couldn't agree with you more. It is this watch that made me fall in love with all the Daytonas. It also set me on a long journey to discover the history of this wonderful chronograph and what makes it such an icon.

Importantly I still learning everyday which makes vintage Rolex soo much more interesting than just buying an expensive new watch.

All the best.

Well, I'm glad to see you got your money back and all is well. Yeah, those PN Daytona's are expensive. I really liked the watch too. I just wish we could find out from Rolex if they produced it and get to the bottom of this.....once and for all.
