IMO 8'44" of my life just wasted.
The current Boxter S is around 140K in Oz and I would expect this model to cost more. I'd guess around 150K drive away. It will cost a bit more and weigh a bit more with the aircon for Australian models. I'll stick with my 34 GTR tks.

Yeah, this isn't even a limited edition right?
I know a guy who has a 58 Speedster and an 89 Speedster. Both mint. This new "Spyder" is but a dim shadow of the tradition it means to associate itself with. |

You're correct that it is not a limited edition, but it is currently the most powerful 987 cabriolet version ever made. With an emphasis on power to weight and a purity of sports car design, I've a feeling that it fits (within its price point) nicely in the tradition Porsche's open roadsters. Just my $0.02.

there are two types of Porsche's , 911's(993,996,etc) and everything else.
It's all or nothing when buying a Porsche

I have a 911 Carrera S (997), but if you've ever driven a 987 platformed mid-engined Porsche, you realize that there is only one type of Porsche - a brilliantly engineered vehicle, in whatever form.

Hot, would love to drive one of these. If I hadn't already picked up my 987 a few months ago, I would be first on the list for this thing, radio and a/c delete. Dammit...

The Lotus Elise is more of a spiritual successor to the cars of old. The 550 Spyder was 1350 lbs. That new Porsche is 2811 lbs (176 lighter than a Boxter). The Lotus Elise is 1984 lbs. A friend of mine has one - it's truly amazing, and the lightness has a lot to do with that. |

But for power to weight brilliance, you'd have to go with Lotus. It is their specialty - that toyota powerplant that's shoehorned into their mid-engined Elise and the more powerful Exige feels and sounds a lot like a supercar engine at prices below what even Porsche charges. Hell, you cannot get a Corvette for what you can pick up a Lotus for. The only problem with the Lotus - and it is a big one - is the ease of ingress and egress in the car. You have to perform an acrobatic maneuver just to test drive the brilliant machine. That, and the lack of simple creature comforts (like carpet - but light weight comes with a price) make the car impossible for all but the very young to use as a daily driver. But it is a great, great track car. Fast, light and nimble, it can run with cars with twice the horsepower. I've driven one, and it is more fun than I can say. And nothing - nothing - looks like it.

I prefer my performance with comfort and a bit of space. My 34 GTR is listed at 1540 kg (3380 lbs). Mine has >290 kW (390 hp) at the wheels. Handles ok.
Great (better?) bang for your buck IMO.

Hot!!! I want one!
"The Boxster Spyder is watered down to protect the 911 which is Porsche's flagship model." I still want a GT3 RS though

My dad used to race Porsches. I like them a lot, but I think I'd still rather have a Corvette for my own money though...

Porsche fanatic.
Boxster? Love it. As a tribute and an evolution to the 550? Yes. As an antecdote to the legions of Camrys and GMs? Yes. As an antithesis to the "we will park it for you since you can't be bothered" of Lexus? Yes. I will take mine in an "S" please. Love the Cayman, likewise a tribute to the 904, Butzi's fiberglass torpedo, still brilliant after all these decades. I think Porsche should ditch the SUVs, but they keep Porsche alive. As for 911's, give me a pre-safety bumper 911s, a mid 80's 911sc, the 993 (last of the air-cooled), or the current 997 in a Carrera 4s form. Merlot red or black, please. Love 'em all. Even the 928 GTS, which was like driving a Lear Jet: not so great when slow and in the corners, (unlike my old 968) but once she got rolling....fast, with plenty of luxury. Though I have a soft spot for the last of the C4 corvettes..lady friend i dated for many years had two of them. |
