Storing watch with crown pulled out

If watches are displayed in stores and or transported with the crown pulled out, should you not store your own watches in the same manner ?

What is the real reason for pulling out the crown ?

This is an interesting question. I have heard pulling the crown out on a quartz watch extends the battery life when the watch is not being worn for an extended time. I never thought about its significance on a mechanical watch. Maybe someone with more knowledge on this subject can explain the reasoning behind this.

I wouldn't store a watch with the crown pulled out. You risk humidity and dirt getting into the case.

Never would work best.

As Jon said, If it's Quartz it would save the battery, with the additional upside if it fills up like a fish bowl with water it's a good excuse to go out and get a proper mechanical watch.

Exactly... As far as I know some movements block the rotor when the crown is pulled out, and in almost all cases, except Patek models, not sure if all or just the Nautilus models, the crown pulled out will stop the hands from moving, so if in transport the watch was moved and the rotor winded a little this would make it impossible for the hands to move, at least that is how I see it, maybe there is another explanation, but as Thomas said it is bad for humidity and dust...
