Controversy of a one watch collection

So I don’t do it much at work but I started talking watches with an employee that really doesn’t have the same passion as I carry for the precise mechanism to tell what time it is. Ok it’s a sickness I digress.

I asked him if he had enough money to buy a watch what would the only and last watch he would buy? To my surprise he said a a Rolex Daytona in yellow gold. Ok I thought not bad but why? He told me because his father had one and never took it off.
He turns to me glancing at my wrist and say back to me well since you have so many watches what watch would you spend the rest of your life with.
So here I sit 4hrs later with my employee glancing across the shop waiting for his reply.

So to the forum what do you all think about this rabbit hole of a topic. I’m still not sure I mean I wear a seiko skx007 daily to work I like having a day and date and don’t mind getting it scuffed up around the shop. But I don’t know.

I'd probably stick with my OP39, blue dial. That would be fine, actually.

Ok so after really thinks about it. If one watch was the only option I’d have to say a Rolex explorer 2 it’s a watch I don’t yet have, but I will get one day. It has a date which I always seem to look at and I have family across the pond so it’s nice to have the second time zone to keep track for phone calls. That only took me 9hrs. Now just go get my hands on one.

i recently made the decision and purchased a VC overseas dual time (my grail). The ability of the quick band/bracelet system really changes things up, effortlessly.

It was purchased to commemorate the birth of my daughter, so I'm looking forward to viewing old photo's and seeing it's presence.

My Breguet tradition
I had a Rolex Datejust for years and then went down the collection route and then found I always had a favourite and prefer to have all my watch money in one best and favourite piece

Both the overseas and tradition are an awesome choice. See this is the problem I don’t know if it would be possible for me to just have one watch. I get to see all these cool awesome time pieces and I’m like oh ok so how can I afford it.

I did ask my wife the same question last night. And to my surprise she had an answer in like 2 seconds. She told me her oris pro pilot. I was so surprise because I got her a beautiful grand seiko sbge269 last week.
Congrats on the babe and the watch. I can’t wait for a little one of m own one of these days!!

I could easily get by with one watch, but thank God that'll never happen

Seriously though, I think if I were a rational, sane person this one would do me just fine

I'll go for the new Ed White. So simple and yet not. Or it could be FPJ CB if I ever get my hand on one.

After all the watches I tried, if I could only have one, It’d be my 126600. But I would miss my Lange 1.

It’s quite wonderful to put it in brief terms. Truly has its own magic. When you purchase a watch like this, it is not the object you receive, but the time and dedication of the people who‘ve spent their whole adult lives training to make it. That might sound awfully poetic, but you can see it in the finesse of the execution. It’s decidedly hand made and yet perfekt in its very own fashion. You have to move up the chain quite a bit with Patek for things to truly feel that way. Or select well among what Vacheron is offering. The Lange 1 has a special place for the brand and they sure give it what they can to keep it worthy of that.

Wow this speaks mountains. Maybe some day I’ll have the privilege to acquire such a wonderful piece of horology. It feel kinda trivial now that a 216570 is my one watch. The more I see responses and think wow now that would be an awesome one watch. This makes me think I can never be a one watch guy. I guess that’s the curse of this life style. Hahaha I am jealous tho

Older OP 39, 114300 off the top of my head, but could be mistaken.

You know the Rolex is probably fine. That’s the reason I‘d choose my SD if I could only have one. The Rolex is a canvas onto which you get to paint your own story, while the Lange should be equated to the painting of a great master, kept behind a cordon in the spotlight of your personal museum. You’ll always have the Rolex with you and little by little, it’ll have ticked down every second of every minute of every adventure you take it on. It’ll be a part of you and if you knock it around in the process, it will collect its bruises as you will. The Lange or any other watch of that nature is something very different. It is something that you get to use on certain occasions, but mainly to hold and conserve for a little bit of its existence. Due to what I tried to capture in my post above, you’d not meet it with the respect the work of its makers really deserves if you subjected it to any real „wear“ (or at least you’d be fairly decadent if you did). It’s therefore almost as if it’s something that had been lent to you. And that’s fine. It’s not without reason that Patek’s „you only look after it for the next generation“ ads are so successful. But unlike a steel Rolex, such a watch will never be something - or at least it probably shouldn’t - that becomes so much of a part of you that you forget you’re wearing it. And as that’s one of the most beautiful things that can happen with a watch, I‘d venture to say that anyone would be well catered to with a Rolex sports model and no Lange, if they could only have one, but the opposite is not necessarily true. If all you had was a Lange, you’d either have to treat it as it shouldn’t be treated, or you’d not really have your own watch.

Your absolutely right. The whole reason I because obsessed with this niche hobby was because it was the love of one individual or a collective of skilled craftsmen giving you a hand made work or art. Being a machinist my whole life I truly appreciate what it means to pour your heart into your work. Theres nothing better than seeing the face of your customer when there beyond excited to see there dream made a reality. I’ve got to put parts on Mars into space and keep country’s power on. I’ve done parts that people have walking around in them. And it’s really amazing to see someone use one of our products. I think I’m still a little naive with the hobby. I want to wear everything I can. I want to experience the craftsmanship of all watch. It gives me a glimpse into the life of the watchmaker. Ever time I look at a dial or case lines I feel the emotion of the watchmaker. I think this is where the soul of the watch comes from. It’s from the heart of the maker him self or her self. I think I may have to look deeper into my heart to find the real reason such a small thing brings me so much joy and happiness.

Sounds to me like it does for all the right reasons. Hope your collection will take you to the places where this truly resonates. But never forget to enjoy the watches you’re wearing while you’re dreaming of those you’re pursuing.

Gotta agree with this. I'd probably have to say at least 6 watches, or none.
The lowest number I reached was 8, but now I'm back at 14

Well said and I have to agree about how amazing it is. I mine on the wrist 8 days straight and never felt so good about a watch on my wrist. And I've owned a good many

VC Overseas Dual Time would be the one for me - it gets most wrist time already and feels right for almost all occasions depending on strap choice. Hard to compete with a Rolex on this front, but it feels very robust and can stand up to the demands of a daily wear, while still scratching the itch of having something beautiful to stare at when flipping it over.

But I definitely would be a tough task to let go of others with a sentimental connection.
